Mattie E Treadwell

Mattie E. Treadwell was a major in the Women’s Army Corps during the war. After the war, she wrote this volume in the “Special Studies” subseries of the Army’s official history.

The Women’s Army Corps started out as the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, an organization which served alongside, and not within, the Army. Its personnel were civilians and not Army women. At first it was planned to raise one million WAACs; in fact, the organization, which in mid-1943 was formally incorporated into the Army, remained all-volunteer and small, with a peak strength of under 100,000. Most Wacs served in the United States, freeing up men to serve overseas (one reason why Army enlisted men were so opposed to them).… (mehr)
