This was just perfect for my reading mood this week.

I confess that I really love 'popular science' so when I came across this book on sale it was an automatic purchase (well I knew it would end up a present for a family member but even so I knew it was something I wanted to read).

in 2017 a plan was developed (and yest there is controversy about this plan) to map the entirety of the ocean floor by 2030. So, you think, that's not that hard surely? But it is, we really know hardly anything about the ocean. This book is a really good overview of the history of mapping the ocean, some of the inherent difficulties (and yes there's a lot - I particularly liked the comparison that the accuracy of mapping the ocean floor with our current technology is similar to shining a laser pointer from the peak of Everest to the base of the mountain), as well as what would need to be done to achieve this.

I really think this was a very worthwhile read and I'm glad that I chose to do so.… (mehr)
