Very interesting read about when the US Government kept moving the natives off their land as they were purchasing territories and creating mores states. Told through the three very different, yet similar women and all facing tough decisions as rights are being threatened for some, taken from others and given to those who only continue to gain. I loved how the author used the three different women to weave this story about some of the terrible things that happened in history and how it affected them based on their standing and background. Samantha Lockwood is bound to go against her fathers wishes and marry for love not convenience or family status. Day Sets has had a child with a white man and is quickly learning that the ways of the white man and his government are not providing as promised. Harriet Robinson born into slavery is getting insight into what freedom looks like when she is sent north as a "servant". I learned a lot about history of the terrible things the government promised and did to obtain land in the northern territories and continue to grow the states without regard to those who already resided on this land. Very interesting read! Thank you to the author for the free novel and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.… (mehr)

Well written

This book is set in Hawaii and is well written and very well researched. It gives insight in Hawaiian culture and is set between the 1920’s and the 1950’s including War War II. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this book set in Hawaii starting in 1922 and ending in California in 1950.

Dolores was sent to live with her father's friend when she was only 7 when he couldn't take care o her since he was working and her mother died earlier. She basically became a child laborer that age. She also was a strong women dealing with an abusive husband and two daughters. She was only 16 when she married Manolo and had two daughters at a young age.

When Pearl Harbor hit, she left for California and stayed with her brother. Her life continued on without her husband.

It wasn't an easy book to read in places but I enjoyed "being in Hawaii" and all it's glory despite Pearl Harbor.

The ending was abrupt to me.

In this book, I joined three different women on their journeys to a better life while preserving their traditions and cultures. Samantha, after braking the marriage agreement with her boring suitor, was sent to her brother to the wild Michigan Territory. She accommodated in her new world fast enough while helping her brother in the store, meeting new friend, and falling in love with Alexander Miree. Samantha wanted to marry somebody of her choice whom she would love, and she loved Alex but didn't know about his other life.
Day Sets from Mdewakanton tribe was one of four of a chief Claud Man's daughters. With her, I explored the life of Natives, their traditions, and struggles that awaited her father’s tribe.
I encountered life of slavery with Harriet Robinson, a young Black slave who dreamed of freedom. Three different women in three different worlds and yet their lives collided.
Make sure to read Historical Notes at the end of the book where you will find what happened to three main characters. They are real women and their legacy is forever sealed in this novel.

Ulleseit did an amazing job of evoking three different lives in Michigan Territory in the 1800s. She has created a well-crafted story with vivid historical events and strong characters where faith and hope guided three women to their destination. It is the book that remembers lives of our ancestors through the voices of three women-White, Native, and Black. This was surprisingly engaging tale and I would like to thank the author for sending me this great ARC book.
