Durante una missione di ricognizione in territorio bosniaco con lo scopo di fotografare le postazioni nemiche, un pilota della Marina Americana, Chris Burnett viene abbattuto e inseguito senza tregua: inizia così la lotta per sfuggire alle armate serbe e sopravvivere in territorio nemico. Lo attende un tragico destino, visto che c'è l'ordine di non inviare alcun soccorso per evitare di far correre rischi inutili ad altri uomini. Ma lottando contro il tempo e contro le decisioni del comando supremo della Nato, il diretto superiore di Burnett, mette a repentaglio la sua carriera per portare in salvo il suo pilota.
