1962. Entertaining. A little fluffy. Very Mad Men. An ad man doesn't want to get married. He finds a girlfriend amenable to sleeping with him. They make a 'modern' arrangement for three days a week. Then a conniving wannabe starlet moves in with him and refuses to leave until he gets her on television. They make a three-way arrangement after a small amount of lying. Then, the funniest part to me, an anthropologist friends starts studying their relationship as compared to the polygamous marriage customs in certain tribes she's studied. After that it kind of all falls apart quick and he ends up like every other guy, married in the suburbs with two kids in a heartbeat. The denouement basically sucked. I wondered if the publisher forced him to end the poly thing to uphold some warped moral standard of the time. Lots of New York City, which to me is always an important character in any book.… (mehr)
