Joan Weiskopf

I've been simultaneously reading several books on pet nutrition, and this is the first I've finished. The is clear, to-the-point, and incredibly well written.

Ms. Weiskopf makes clear distinctions between dietary needs of cats and dogs, which other books don't. Cats are obligate carnivores, where dogs are omnivores. It's a big difference in diet.

The book is easy to navigate: you can find which common foods are toxic, what to look for in commercial food, or recipes for making your own food for your pets in a flash.

This serves as a pretty nice introduction to improving your pet's nutrition. Joan Weiskopf starts off with a little background regarding the history of pet food and how until the 20th century, pets lived largely off people food, especially table scraps. She then goes into some detail regarding the way modern pet food is produced, which will definitely give you second thoughts about feeding it to your cat or dog.

The last section has a lot of good information about what kind of food is best for your pet and how to prepare it, followed by a section of recipes, and then some information on the different nutrients, vitamins and minerals that your pet should be getting.

Overall, a nice guide to better feeding practices, though the book could certainly have a little more in depth. But for anyone considering changing their pet's diet, this book is a good place to start.… (mehr)
