Harvey Wheeler (1918–2004)

The combination of pretty common mistakes in procedure, launches an atomic attack on Moscow by American Forces. There's well written ratcheting up of suspence, and some character developemet. It was a popular Doomsday book, in its time.

Surprisingly not too dated. Sure, the Cold War is over and the chance of a mechanical malfunction triggering global thermonuclear war is minimal -- but the world hasn't changed that much.

...stumbled across this book in the stacks. A library-only guy, I normally read newly-published books only but there weren't any I wanted to read that particular day, so I went searching. I recognized it as a well-known book (a classic?), it intrigued me. Despite the fact that it was published in 1962(!)it read like a current-day thriller/suspense story and was a great read!
