Here are a series of beautiful and fascinating photographs depicting the properties of water as it evaporates, splashes, condenses and bubbles. This book is certainly for the tween crowd, but the writing is descriptive and interesting, sneaking the facts in subtly. The glossary in the back of water related terms helps give clarity to the concepts.

I liked this, even though it made me feel like I'm not smart enough to wrap my head around some of the concepts. Red and green make yellow? Huh? I thought yellow was a primary color. (I had to google this to understand that I've been wrong about primary colors my whole life!)

This is both a very cool book and a sort of unsatisfying book because it touches on a lot of concepts that make me as a reader beg for further explanation. So if you look at this as a jumping off point for further reading and exploration, it's a winner. On it's own, it sort of just boggles the mind, though I'm sure there are very smart kids out there who already have a strong background in science who will enjoy it.

This is an informational book. It talks about what light is, incandescence, color, pigments, and more. Something that I liked about the book is the pleasing photos on each page. The photos are simple and clear. I would use this book as a read-aloud for 4-5 graders. I don't think I would use this book with my first graders because there are too many words on each page and I just don't think it would keep my students engaged. In a 4-5 grade class, I could use it to introduce a light unit or even to check understanding in the middle of a light unit by using question prompts.

These are a family favorite in our house. My kids look forward to us pulling this off the shelves every year and spending hours finding the hidden objects on the pages. Our youngest daughter practices her reading skills by reading the clues on each page. Love these!

This book is all about light. The author explains concepts such as incandescence, iridescence, pigment, energy, refraction, wavelength/frequency, lenses, atmospheric light, and sunlight. I like the book because it contains descriptive and beautiful images to go along with the abstract and complex content. Throughout the book as well as at the end of the book, the author also provides some experiments that can be done. This allows students to try exploring light themselves, which may be helpful for kinesthetic learners (and will be fun for all learners). I would use this in the classroom by putting it in my library and referring to it during a unit about light, the solar system, or color. This book is best for intermediate students and older, because the concepts are quite abstract and may not be developmentally appropriate for early elementary students.

Baby board book with simple, colorful layouts showing various holiday scenes with objects for toddlers to find. Red hat, cow, snowman. Lots to share with toddlers, and readers can ask the child to find other objects in the pictures. For instance, where the book asks for the reader to find a red hat, eagle-eye searchers will also spot a blue hat. Loads of fun for wee ones!

This book is filled with amazing pictures of water in various states and forms. This book would be a great tool for students of any age when teaching water cycles, states of matter, or many other topics such as surface tension.

A book about the properties of water, illustrated with amazing magnified and mid-action photos that explain and enhance the text information. In the back is an Observations and Experiments section that talks about how to experiment with and recreate many things shown in the book. Beautiful, interesting and engaging.

I liked this book for many reasons. I liked how the author provides pictures for each subtopic. This book provided facts about water and the different forms of it. It also provides information about the water cycle. i also like how the language and vocabulary is not very difficult so younger readers will be understand the complex ideas about science and water. i also liked how in the back of the book the author provides a deeper description about each of the subtopics discussed in the book. Overall this book would be a great resource in a science classroom to allow students a better understanding of water and its qualities.

The photographic presentation of water are so interesting the photo's and author explains different types and observations as well as scientific content and experiment that can be performed by reader.
The Author Walter Wick take us on a journey of a simple drop of water with simple text inserts of explanations as to why from 1878 Arabella B Buckley. This book will entice readers to think all about a drop of water and its journey that we take for granite in our lives. Beautiful, inspiring photos that really make you think, speculate and want to try this for yourself. A light investigation and explanation of molecules and the parts they play as water transforms itself from liquid, to solid, to gas and back. Great for beginning to understand nature and science.

This book explains the many properties of water by explaining various phenomena involving water. The sub-topics explore the three states of matter of water, surface tension, when air meets water, soap bubbles, and snowflakes and more. The author is trying to show the wonder of these properties through his photography, then explains the science using the appropriate vocabulary in the paragraphs that accompany the photos.

Because of the use of photographs in this text, the author has created a highly interesting and engaging text for children. He has captured the wonder of children and made them want to further their understanding of what they see in the picture by reading the descriptions below. In terms of accuracy and thoroughness, the author does a good job of giving the child accurate vocabulary to explain what they see. It is “just enough” information to give them some understanding, but since there are no more than three paragraphs for any one topic, the author doesn’t go into too much detail about any one thing. This is nice, however, for children that may get “turned off” from a text that is too “wordy” or technical.

I can’t say that this book personally affected me in any way, really. The only way it’s related to “my own personal agenda” is that it goes with a fifth grade unit I teach about properties of water, water cycle, water conservation, etc. I read this book with fifth graders last year for the first time and loved it because of how much it motivated my kids to read and know more about the topic. I will be using it again this year when we get to that unit.

Walter Wick’s amazingly detailed close up photography is reason enough to share this book with children in a study of the different aspects and properties of water. The images invite the reader into the book and then encourage them to read the text to understand the pictures. Experiments described in the book could be recreated in the classroom as well.
