Patrice Williams Marks

I love old movies and television shows. Something about the acting, especially in the 40’s and 50’s, was so fresh and timeless, one can’t help but be in awe. Despite all of the entertainment I’ve watched during that era I haven’t wanted many with Bette Davis. I was more of a Rosalind Russel fan myself, preferring comedies to other genres, but I appreciate Bette Davis, and her obvious devotion to her craft.

I didn’t realize until I picked up Dear Bette that she hand wrote responses to her many adoring fans, which is what makes up one of the most unique books I think I’ve ever read. I first must state that her dedication to her admirers is obvious, and the fact that we are able to read her actual words and advice is remarkable! It is apparent she cares about these writers, as her responses are not merely brush-offs, but well thought out, some with sass, and others with heart, but all coming from the voice of a legend.

One thing that struck me as I read each letter and response is the fact that the questions, and advice, hasn’t changed much over the decades. I guess some problems are just timeless, something I took unique solace in.

My thanks to Patrice Williams Marks for taking the time to compile this fun read, transporting me to a “simpler” time, and a brief glimpse into a Hollywood legends mind, helping me to know her better, and respect her even more.… (mehr)

I loved reading what advice Bette Davis would give people during the 1940’s. Most letters referred to military service in the 1940’s during WWII. This was certainly a time of unrest, however people still had hopes, dreams and looked for advice.

I love old movies and Bette is one of my favorites, so this was a fun book for me to read and review. I enjoyed the book. The advice, slightly dated of course, enjoyable, nonetheless. My takeaway was that the calendar may change but some things do stay the same.… (mehr)

This was a fun book. I loved reading what advice a famous actress was giving to people during WWII. Some of her advice was really good in my opinion, maybe even ahead of her time. Some was maybe a little dated, but it was the the 1940s in the U.S. I think probably that would be the case with any advice looked back on in this manner.
