Teresa Peirce Williston (1875–1920)

This is a retelling of a Japanese folktale about a couple that discovers a baby girl in some bamboo. They take her home to raise, and she grows up and becomes known as the Bamboo Princess, as she is very beautiful. She has lots of suitors but refuses them all, because she just wants to care for her parents. She knows she has to return to her home on the moon one day, and as soon as both her parents die she does return there.

Delightful collection of Hindu stories for children, with lovely illustrations by Maud Hunt Squire. The end sheets, too, have Indian designs.

A pleasant surprise, considering this book was published in 1917, is a section at the end of suggestions to teachers, which describes Hindu religion and customs in a manner unusually objective for the time.
