Clare Wright is an Australian historian, writer, and broadcaster. She was born on May 14, 1969 in Ann Arbor, Michigan and migrated to Australia with her mother in 1974. She is a graduate of the University of Melbourne with a BA (Honours) in history, Monash University with a MA in public history and mehr anzeigen University of Melbourne with a PhD in Australian studies. She has worked as a speechwriter, university lecturer, historical consultant, and a radio and television broadcaster. Her first book is entitled, Beyond The Ladies Lounge: Australian Women Publicans. She won the 2014 Stella Prize and 2014 Nib Waverley Library Award for Literature with her second book, The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka, which is also being adappted into a TV series. The forgotten rebels are the women. The Eureka story has come down to us as a story of men's heroism, and the role of women has been ignored. Wright tracks down the women on the Ballarat goldfields, some of whom played important roles in the fight for democratic rights.
We learned about the Eureka Stockade and the miners' rebellion in primary school, but we didn't learn about the government corruption, the arbitrary arrests and convictions of innocent men on trumped up charges, the soldiers' brutality, the bayonetting of unarmed men and women, the firing of tents with women and children inside them.
An interesting and very readable book about an important piece of Victoria's history.… (mehr)
