Über michI'm an environmental advocate with an interest in essays, history, world cultures, gardening, and some poetry. I respect literary fiction, but my taste more often runs to science fiction and mysteries. My wife and I read a lot with our young daughters, so I'm always on the lookout for good children's books -- especially picture books that explore natural habitats and human cultures.

Über meine BibliothekTracking reading on LibraryThing has given me a sharp sense of how few books I'll actually manage to read in my lifetime compared to the many excellent and enjoyable books that are published each year. It's deepened my appreciation of the gems I encounter, while reinforcing my skepticism of lists of 'must reads'. I read LibraryThing book reviews, and am grateful for readers who take time to share their reactions to books.

Thank you! Yes, I think your description of a thread as a sort of blog is a pretty good one, although I hadn't thought of it like that before. It's essentially a way of posting your reviews and other comments/thoughts in a chronological way, as well as discussions on the books and comments by other people who follow that thread.

The different discussion groups on LT have different atmospheres, so for example the 75 Books Challenge (http://www.librarything.com/groups/75booksin2013) is very chatty, Le Salon (http://www.librarything.com/groups/thequestforthelastpa) is erudite and opinionated, and the group I use, Club Read (http://www.librarything.com/groups/clubread2013) is somewhere in between.

I have quite a lot of threads which I follow, because I share reading tastes with the people who write them, find their reviews interesting, and so on. It can be quite a nice community. I asked because if you did have one I would certainly follow your reading!

Margaret
You write fantastic reviews! - and read very interesting books. Do you have a thread on LT anywhere?

I just thought you should know that I enjoyed your review of Kagan's Thucydides. Very professional and exactly what a review should say. Looks like I'll have to trudge my way through the Landmark Thucydides after all. Picking up the Kagan was a snap decision at B&N after cashing my student loan balance check. I also grabbed John Keegan's Second World War, which I haven't definitively topped in almost twenty years of reading WWII after borrowing it from the library lo those many moons ago.
Just started Saragossa and loving it. Saw your review and you may want to check out Melmoth the Wanderer. After a few chapters, the author suddenly digs down about eight nested stories deep. Quite a feat and a fun read.
Thanks for adding me to the interesting libraries list. I envy you your Burton edition of Arabian Nights. We do seem to share some areas of interest, not that I've been active in many discussions lately.
Yes, the overlap includes many wonderful books. And thank you so much for the kind words about my reviews. It is nice to know someone has read them!

Truth be told, five of the 23 are Early Reviewer books, and five -- mostly SF -- are reviews I put together from discussions I have had with people about books in another forum I frequent. As for the rest, several relate to tennis, about which I am passionate; several stem from opposing reactions to the comments of others; two relate to my interest in the decipherment of ancient texts; and a couple are books I just happen to like a whole lot! In general, I like to review books I love, so others can enjoy them as well, but I am not one of those people who is revved up to review extensively or promiscuously -- I'd rather be reading!
I am honored to be added to your Interesting Libraries -- thank you! I look forward to more conversation in the Ancient History and Medieval Europe Groups!
Thanks for the encouraging words! I find that writing a review helps to me to summarize the book and fix it better in my mind. Enjoy these last days of summer.
Of course. I love being asked about books! I belong to a book club which assigns a title each month amd that encourages me to read in new directions. I am also always looking for new titles ~ browsing libraries, bookstores, and reviewing book review sites. My best choices come from recommendations from readers with similar tastes. Hence flagging your library ~ Young Men and Fire, a book we share, is one of my favorites. I also enjoy nonfiction and will refer to you library when I make my next selection. What would you recommend? As for the stars ~ I believe quick and wholistic scoring is the most accurate. The author's skill as a writer is the greatest determinant. I find I struggle most with books in which the writing is exceptional but the content disagreeable, for example Faulkner(and Louise Erdrich.)
Happy reading.
Thank you for adding mine to your Interesting Libraries. Although the number is small, the variety of our shared books is interesting.
