Consider all ratings fairly arbitrary, but in general this is the scale I use:

5 stars - Fabulous. I'm keeping it and expect to re-read it often.

4 stars - Really good. I'll most likely keep it and re-read it.

3 stars - Good, but may not make the keeper shelf unless it's part of a series I otherwise enjoy. I'm unlikely to re-read it.

2 stars - Not very well done or not to my taste. I'm likely to get rid of it and may avoid the author's other works.

1 star - Pretty special, in the sense that I probably wanted to throw it across the room.
