I am so excited to find a new author, even in the book was written in 2009! Nyx, a private eye of not totally human proportions, her friend and co-worker Olivia and a cast of seriously bad demons are enough to catch and keep your attention.

It seems a Demon Master has decided to create a new Demon Gate in Manhattan. Not a good idea for anyone in the area, much less the Demon Master. Nyx, just getting over a heartbreak of major dimensions has to keep her head in the right place and her energy up to combat this threat to humanity. Great book! ( )

The first couple of chapters are a bit choppy, almost to the point of awkwardness, as McCray introduces the characters and sets the scene and backstory. So I initially was worried that the rest of the book would be as choppy/awkward. But once it got past the intro and the story really kicked into gear, the book flowed and I found myself not wanting to put it down. Overall, decent fun story, albeit nothing new or unique. Strong willed princess with a kitschy side kick and hunky men, set in an urban fantasy world of vampires, fae, where's, shifters, etc. A fun read and I'll definitely pick up the second book in this series. I've had just plain rotten luck lately. This is the latest in a string of disappointing PNR. I thought about upping my rating to a 2.5 at one point - 2 for the first half and then a 3 for the last half. But then I reached the end and saw how many open threads were left and gave up on the idea.

My primary complaint was the first person narrative. I really don't like them. I always wonder why exactly the person is telling the story in the first place. It's exacerbated in this case because the heroine, Nyx, is constantly referencing her Drow powers. I don't know how many times she says, "because of my Drow half...," "I'm Drow so...," "my Drow powers enable me to..." It was a lot though. It felt very much like someone who was overly proud of their heritage and taking every opportunity to brag on it. How many of you like spending time with braggarts?

Then there was all of the unnecessary detail in the first half of the book. (It did lighten up in the latter half once the reader was expected to have gotten used to what sort of person Nyx was, which is part of why I considered upping the star rating.) The fact is that I just didn't care if her coat was by Fendi, bag is Dolce & Gabbana and her shoes were Salvatore Ferragamo. Couldn't they just be a coat, purse and heals? And what is an XPhone. It got really distracting being referenced as such. Couldn't it just be a phone, cell, or tablet? I found the whole first half of the book really cluttered with this sort of detail, as well as with all of the descriptions of all of the different species.

Lastly, I didn't get a feel for any of the characters other than Nyx (and just barely her). You know how most books have a couple side characters who you see, but don't know. That's how every character in this book felt. Everyone seem inconsequential. They popped up every now and again to throw out a witticism and then disappeared again.

The whole Paranormal Peacekeeper idea was interesting and there was some interesting world-building. But the whole thing was fairly predictable and wrapped up shockingly easy. I generally just found the whole thing disappointing. ( )

The first 1/2 was a five star read, but the author seemed to rush the ending making it a 4 star read. The author switched to telling the story instead letting us "see" the story. I found I liked the secondary characters better than the heroine. Olivia and "T" fantastic, Nyx got to be just too much, "so beautiful, so purple no AMETHYST.... enough already ! Oh, the phone Nyx picks up her XPHONE, all the freaking time, and the author tells us this !!!!! Honestly even with this major flaws I loved the background characters enough to recomend this book and the next in the series.
Each new book in the series will have a new Night Tracker, good enough of Nyx I want more Toran and Olivia ( )

A fun foray into the paranormal. Thoroughly enjoyable. A definite fun read. ( )

I thought this was a good start to a series. Nyx is not only a P.I., but also a Night Tracker, which keeps her very busy with paranormal activity. The thing I liked most about this book and this series is that it has every type of paranormal/fantasy creature you can think of integrated into the story; it isn't just about vampires or werewolves. I think that helps give the story more depth, and gives a wide range of story lines that the author can use later on in the series. ( )

Maybe I need to keep a list of heroine names separated by author; because for the first few pages I had the heroine of "Demons Not Included" confused with another heroine of the same name (slightly different spelling I think) by another author and it threw me for a bit. Cheyenne McCray's new 'Night Tracker' series began with a bang and, at least for me, ended with a bit of a whimper.

Nyx is a one-of-a-kind gal--half-human, half-Drow. By day she's a blonde human--at night she's an amethyst (NOT PURPLE)-skinned, dark-haired Drow. She grew up living in the Drow underworld pampered by both parents and got her strong will and strength from her Dad the Drow King, and her unwillingness to submit and daytime human looks from her Mom. She's also likely the only Drow female to be trained as a warrior and she can certainly kick butt. However, all these things made her a sort of outcast in Drow society...not that it really bothered Nyx' she'd much rather live in the human realm anyway.

Nyx also has a plethora of sexy, available men--one a Drow, one a human, and one a...something. This first book really mostly sets the scenery and rules for McCray's new series (even though it's an offshoot of her previous 'Magic' series) and introduces the main cast. Maybe that's why I felt a little let-down at the end...because although there is AN ending, it's not an END...is that too confusing?

There's sex (and with more than one character), there's mystery (of the paranormal sort), there's action (all over the place), and there's lots of bad guys and a big battle towards the end. Now, even though "Demons Not Included" wasn't a five-star read for me, I fully intend to follow the series and see where she's headed and what happens next with Nyx. So did I enjoy the book? Yes. Will I continue to read Cheyenne McCray? Yes. Was I a little disappointed? Yes. ( )
