Thank you. Good idea.

Thank you so much! :) The last thread took forever to load.

With her combination book case/rock-climbing wall, she could exercise her body and mind at the same time!

Umm. My "bookshelves" are there to hold...Umm...books?
Which I do (eventually) read.
Am I missing something?

I look at that picture and think, "Look at all that wasted wall space. They could hold lots more shelving if it were better organized!"

Until I learn how to post photos here......here's a unique bookshelf.

When fleeing a bear bookcase, what better way to make your escape than to climb up a book rockclimbing wall?
12GaryCandelaria
Very nice! Clean lines, simple design, nice finish from what I can see. Good job!

11: I'm very jealous! That is exactly what I wish to build a wall of in my place.
14readafew
Thank you. Here's a picture of it before it was filled.
I'm hoping to get enough time to make another to sit right beside it by Christmas, fingers crossed!

Excellent! Good luck with getting #2 in place.

Here are my happiest books in my happiest shelves in a bookcase I made where each shelf 'articulates' (not the right word, but gives a sense), resulting in three different heights along any one horizon. The big idea is to allow the same subject, with its varying heights of books to co-exist in the most efficient space. Stupidly complex to work out and construct though it was, it sort of works.
Sorry - I'll post the picture later when I've worked out how to add one. I tried by copying and pasting, but only the address was pasted, not the image.

Nope, still just an address.
22staffordcastle
scintillathepun, you need to go to your photo gallery, linked on your profile, and upload the photo there, or else upload it to another photo hosting website, such as flickr or PhotoBucket. Then you can just put a link in your message.
23scintillathepun
Thanks staffordcastle. The link works, but the pic doesn't show here.

Wow, and I thought I was a bit obsessed with maximising use of space! That's both crazy and brilliant :-)

I've saved your photos to share with a Woodworking fiend friend who will really appreciate your - as martin said - brilliance.

very handsome, and clever, indeed!

Very nice, my head would turn around 3 times and explode if I tried to figure out something like that.
29Osbaldistone
Okay, so you glued the books to the wall and then inserted the shelves in between, right?

#26 - I've been staring at that in wonder for about five minutes. As someone who regards two wall-brackets and a plank as major building work, I can do nothing but bow down to you, sir!
322wonderY
Just a clarification - the photo posted in #26 is not mine. I pulled it from scintillathepun's profile, as he was not able to.
33scintillathepun
It's simple, really. Decide which wall you want it on, get some coloured paints - oils are best - and make a picture of a seemingly impossible bookcase filled with books you really like. It does away with planks, books and all, relieving you of the need to own all those books that gather dust, don't get read and take up so much of your precious space.
34scintillathepun
Just kidding. I'm not a heretic, nor an apostate.
On second thoughts, I might really be a heretic - are Quakers still regarded as such?

I think every denomination/church is regarded as heretical or apostatical (or both) by at least one other denomination/church, so, yeah, they probably are.

>31 alaudacorax: You are not alone in your difficulties with woodwork. I had a magazine bedside end table. Part of it came apart. My attempts "fix" this problem resulted in total destruction of this item. I absolutely detest the phrase " some assembly required. Ugl! There was a reason why I didn't take shop and instead took latin. You can't harm youself or others while taking a language,

I have fallen in love with this room.

The dark bookshelves with perfectly arranged books, no dust, and gorgeous pops of color. It makes me so happy to look at this room.

Without even considering my Gothic lit obsession, I'm still entirely entranced by Horace Walpole's library at Strawberry Hill. Those are some lovely shelves!
40staffordcastle
WOW! Sweet!
41TLCrawford
Oh my! They even have room for more books.

Might be a bit fiddly getting books on and off the top couple of shelves, though, unless the gothick bits slide up and down.
My ideal model for a home library is still Trinity College Cambridge (or possibly Mafra for those times when you need a little bit of extra space), but I think I could live with that one too...

Very nice, a lovely warm-looking room. Your coat rack (is that what it is?), is evocative of the Walpole decorations.
Love the cat, every well equipped library requires a cat.

Actually, it's the center section of a folding screen I was building and will probably never finish.

A Gothic tracery folding screen? Why didn't I ever think of that?! Awesome!
Your library indeed looks like a (more than) comfortable place to read. :)

Here is a fantastic way to store your books and still display them when you have limited space. I came across this picture awhile back on Bookshelf Porn (a drool-worthy website for bibliophiles), and I would love to use the idea someday. All you have to do is stick a glass-fronted door on an existing closet and bam...your very own Library Closet!

My bedroom closet would be a great size for that. It's certainly not a good size for a clothes closet...

What cat? where, where...
Oh, just increased brightness on my aging (CRT) monitor and there it was :-)
Thanks, at first I was taken with the glass door of #50 but after I priced one I DO really like the no door look
Minimalist, chic and cheap :-)
Errr...where are my cinder blocks and pine planks?

These are closets I would love to crawl into and stay a while :) Apparently I need to train my cats to guard my books. Right now they chew on the corners. (Grrrr...)

#61,
But so few books.
I too have walls covered with book cases (IKEA - billy :-)
but also agreed, too short and not as "cool".
I want a house with every wall covered with book shelves,
to the 20 foot ceiling. Ha Ha.

>70 staffordcastle: I love that house, I would totally live there.
Reminds me of a helpful hint from Dr. Boli : Books trap air between their pages and in their spines, and thus make very good insulation. Lining your walls with books may therefore qualify you for an energy tax credit.

I always thought it was a shame that they didn't include any pictures with the shelves filled.

Interesting... I have to say that the calligraphic mural and the stool with the little Kufic tiles attract me more than the house, though!

#74 - architects seldom like to have their buildings photographed after they are lived in. here in our library, we refer to several of our architectural design journals as building porn - i.e. airbrushed, big budget enhanced, not meant to be lived in.

I took annual pictures of my "library" and posted them on my blog...

#66: There's a bookstore in Lincolnton, NC, who's back (unopened) half resembles that; the front half is on its way. My mom's generally irritated because at least half their stock - probably including some really, really old books - is inaccessible.
#78: Gah, those are too neat! Even when I move and reorganize my shelves next month, they won't be anywhere near that neat...

>83 lilkim714:: Oh, no! Despite the mess, it's one of my favorite bookstores. :) They have a pretty good selection of books; I usually come out of there with several new reads.
