I have just over five weeks till I go on holiday to Hay-on-Wye and Oxford and my husband thinks that I cannot resist the temptation to buy more books before we go away. So I have joined this group because a, I need help to prove to him that I can do it and b, make at least a small dint in my TBR pile before new books join the shelves from our holidays!

Welcome to the challenge, and best of luck! Hay-on-Wye is a great motivator indeed! :)

Hello rabbitprincess (what a great name!), many thanks for the welcome. I am going to make a list of books from the shelves that I intend to read before Hay-on-Wye.

Welcome to the challenge and good luck. Five weeks doesn't seem so long, but I know temptation is always just around the corner. Just keep thinking of all those great books you already have on your own shelves.

Thank you DeltaQueen50, You are right five weeks doesn't seem that long and some of that time is /has been spent away in Sweden. There are bookshops in Sweden but the books, are 1; not the sort of subject matter I read, 2; double the price of anything at home in England, 3; generally in Swedish. This makes not buying much easier! However, I am back in York later today and so temptation will be greater. The upside is that I currently have so much work to do before I go on holiday that I shouldn't have time to look into the bookshops...

The first of the books of my shelves has been Timothy's Book; Notes of an English Country Tortoise by Verlyn Klinkenborg. This has been a truly wonderful read, sensitive narrative, beautifully written. Why did I take so long to read it???

Have just read my second book from the shelves. This time it was Lyra's Oxford by Philip Pullman , I had purchased it last year when we went o Oxford and thought that I really should read it before we return to the city! It is a short story that is set after the Dark Materials trilogy and features the wonderful Lyra and her daemon. I was amazed that Philip Pullman managed to write such a gripping tale in such a short amount of space but he does! I loved it and the actual book itself is a joy, with a tipped in map of Lyra's Oxford and additional illustrations of items of ephemera that might or might not have fallen into other worlds. A truly wonderful little book.

I have finished The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Poe. Again it had been on my shelf for a couple of year's waiting to be read. It was an interesting read, particularly as it is seen as the first true detective story and it is possible to see it's future influence on Conan Doyle work.

Only a few days now until I go on holiday and I can truthfully say that I have n't purchased a book for the last five weeks. I hope that I don't go too crazy on holiday and add too much to my 'to be read' pile!

Oh dear I spoke a bit too soon, I didn't exactly go crazy and holiday but I did buy quite a few books... So I think that I need to set my next BOMB challenge to myself.
