I first read this book in the late 1980s/early 1990s and I'm pretty sure it was new when I read it. It takes place in the 2050s (2056 stands out in my mind, but I could be making that up). It starts on Earth but then the female protagonist (her name may be Aurora, but again I could be making that up) and her family are chosen for the moon colony. I don't remember much else about it other than that there's a grandmother named Jennifer or Jenny and a scene in a mall. I think everyone's clothes are hyper-color too (that should tell you something about when the book was written).

I know I really loved this book when I was growing up and would love to know what it was. Here's hoping someone can help me!

I wonder if it's This Place Has No Atmosphere by Paula Danziger? I'm not quite sure from your description whether the book you're looking for is "hard sci-fi" or if it's more of a teen book that happens to be set on the moon, which is how I think of the Danziger book I just mentioned.

It sounds like This Place Has No Atmosphere to me too. The main character is definitely named Aurora.

It's 2057 (search inside the book). I agree with the others.

I second the Danziger suggestion. The female protagonist's name is indeed Aurora, she has a Grandmother Jennifer. Malls feature in more than just a scene -- Amazon has some pages up you can skim through, and I found this quote early on about the malls:
There are these stories about people who spend their whole adult lives in malls... living... working... playing. They never leave. "Mole Minds" is what my parents call them.

I really wouldn't mind living in the mall, but my parents go nuts whenever I mention it. We live in a real house now, but soon single houses may have to come down to make room for environmental hives.
(I loved this book too... can you tell?)

That looks like it! I was obsessed with Paula Danziger when I was young, so it makes sense. And reading the descriptions definitely sounded right. Thank you!

I'm also impressed with myself for remembering those small details correctly after 20+ years!
