I'm taking part in the 2013 challenge where I'll be listing and reviewing the books I manage to read, I'll be sure to label the ROOTs ones

Welcome , Pete. I've been working this challenge for four years and I haven't cleared those shelves yet! At least this serves the purpose of moving the older books along and making room for the new ones!

I dont think I'll ever "clear the shelves" books come in at a sometime alarming rate! I'm sure that the net total will be a gain in TBR even if I manage to reach the 80 book mark!
Right I'm probably not going to have much internet access over the next few weeks so Merry Xmas & Happy New Year to you all - see you in 2013!

Hi Pete, this is my first time with this group so making the rounds and checking out the familiar names here. I like your idea of labeling the ROOTs over on your 2013 challenge!

Good luck, and nice to see you here!!!

its taken me ages to catch up on the 2013 challenge group and I've been looking over here guiltily whilst doing so - I'll try to catch up here and visit everyones threads...
So far I've only managed to read 1 ROOT - in watermelon sugar since setting up this thread (out of about 20 books) so not doing brilliantly. However most of those books I read on holiday (and were bought for the holiday) or were presents and I think January (with both Xmas books and my birthday scoring me some more book presents) is always pretty bad at clearing the TBR
80 books over 12 months would be an average of 6/7 books from the TBR per month which is do-able as long as I don't acquire too many shiney book cuckoos (Buckoos?) (books that push books off the TBR and demand to be read first)...
hmm next book that demands to be read is another present...

Books acquired in January (so far) inc presents = 24 (3 second hand, 4 GN, 2 ARC)
Difficult month as my birthday happens beginning Jan (more presents to come too)

I don't even have the excuse of a birthday and I'm up to 17 books. And next week is my thingaversary. sigh.

>12 connie53: Thanks!
And another book enters the house today, the island of Dr. Moreau which is a 2013 challenge book I found I didn't actually own

so have reached 11 ROOT books as of this point - I always expected the early part of the year would be reading shiny new books I get for Xmas & birthday so am quite happy with this total so far
not buying books is working pretty well so far, only 1 physical book has come through the door since last update...

this month not buying books was much harder especially as I went to a signing in London, think that I bought 4 and have just received 2 more ARC
on a plus point though I'm up to 18 ROOT

OK so more books have ended up in the house - I had to take shelter in a library during a rainstorm (no really) and they happened to be having a library sale, fill a bag for £1 so I walked away with 9 books. I also went to see Mohsin Hamid at an event by my favourite book shop and it would be rude not to buy a book at such an event right?
book haul:
a room of One's own by Virginia Woolf
Hippopotamus by Stephen Fry
under the volcano by Malcolm Lowry
on the road by Jack Kerouac
The Elephant and the Flea by Charles Handy
forty signs of rain by Kim Stanley Robertson
awakenings by Oliver Sacks
the deep range by Arthur C Clarke
Colonel Barker's monstrous regiment by Rose Collis
how to get filthy rich in rising asia by Mohsin Hamid

Under the circumstances, Forty Signs of Rain sounds like a very appropriate choice ;) Good haul!

finally managed to update the haul & 40 signs of rain fits the random CAT for this months 2013
afraid I have another haul too. I was at the fantastic Mr B's emporium of reading delights in Bath last night to see Patrick Ness talk about his new book the crane wife which obviously I bought as well as the armed garden and Cat Valente's deathless
I'm also reading a non-TBR book I bought at another event last week too how to get filthy rich in rising Asia but will get back on track soon, just got to get through the presents from Xmas & birthday first!

Very nice hauls! I've just realized that my Thingaversary is in a few days, so now I'm forced to buy some books. Oh, the torture! ;)
Those book events are dangerous places to be with a wallet, aren't they?

It's the anniversary of the date you joined LibraryThing. :) Mine was Feb 21 and I keep missing it!
24connie53
And that's the time when you HAVE to buy books?
Awsome!
But I will have to wait till november!!!

You could have a half-Thingaversary in May! ;)
26LauraBrook
Absolutely - and the important thing is to buy 1 more book than years you've been on LT. That way you have one to "grow on". :)

2 more ROOTs this month, 45 more books to go but am now over half way through the year
minus points for many books entering the house, in my defence I did win two competitions and therefore got 13 books in prizes, but I also bought 12 books so a -25 for me :-(

Well, if you win books, you can't help it.
And only 25 books into the house this year is very good (compared to my 33)

updated my ticker - 36 ROOTs read, 44 to go - not overly optimistic!

OK it looks like I'm totally going to fail this - not even reach halfway! I hang my head in shame...
In October I managed to resist temptation at the Bristol festival of literature but went to BristolCon and got a free book and then went to wfc2013 and we brought 30 new books into the house! (OK 20 of them were freebies)
So my target next year is to be Book Neutral - only allowed to buy books if I have read one on the shelf (with the view of not buying any books at all!!! so the TBR is reduced, I have at least 2 years reading on the shelves of books I own but have not read)

Book Neutral - I like it! I don't think I could do it myself, but it sounds totally reasonable! Good luck to you!
