Sputnik + 50

In four months we will observe the 50th anniversary of Sputnik, which I suspect is of interest to the group. What do you suggest as good summaries of that period? I've read ...the Heavens and the Earth by Walter A. McDougall from 1985; is its account accurate? Has significant new information come to light since its publication? I see that A Ball, a Dog, and a Monkey: 1957 - The Space Race Begins will be released soon, and Sputnik: The Shock of the Century came out last May. Has anyone read either of these?
