Gray wanted to communicate with Painter to let him know about the threat. Was that wise?

I think he should tell Painter about the threat that way Painter will get the whole picture of what they are dealing with.

Someone at Sigma already knows what's happening so Gray might as well contact Painter and tell him everything that he knows and what has happened. It won't be news to someone that's leaking information and might help Gray.

I think he wants to warn Painter about the threat but isn't sure how close the double agent is to him.

He needs to but the question will be how. I assume he'll do something in Istanbul to get his attention and the message will make sense to him somehow.

It was natural for Gray to want to warn Painter that Monk and Lisa were in danger.
