Hi,

I am trying to locate a book I read many years ago when I was about 14, this was in the 1970's, about a couple of homeless children in the London Blitz. I seem to remember the main character was a boy aged around 10 to 14, and a girl maybe a little older. They were trying to survive without parents while avoiding the authorities, and were always on the lookout for ration cards. I also seem to recall that the author may have been the boy in the story, and so it may have been based on a true story. The book was likely written for teenagers I think, as it was in the school library or maybe a class reading. As I live in Australia, it was most likely a British publication, and may have been on a number of school reading lists around the 70's in Australia and possibly Britain. The book could have been published anywhere from the 1950s to the 1970's. However, I don't remember the ending, as I seem to recall I never finished the book, nor do I remember the names of the characters. Not much to go on, but maybe someone in their 50s or 60s might remember it.

Is it The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier?

Although it’s set in Warsaw, not London.

Fireweed by Jill Paton Walsh has two teenagers, a boy and a girl, trying to survive in London during the blitz while separated from their families. They were both supposed to be evacuated, but made their way back to the city and ended up meeting. There's a plot point about the girl finding and using someone else's ration card. By a female author, though, and not autobiographical as far as I know.

>3 konallis: I thought Fireweed by Walsh as soon as I started reading the description. It is written in first person so it seems like personal narrative. The young man has to flee his house because a bomb lands in it. Fireweed was a nickname Londoners gave those children left behind who survived the Blitz. It was originally published in 1969, but I read a republish in the '80s.

Another possiblity is When the Siren Wailed by Noel Streatfeild; there are 3 children in that one however.

Hi All,

Fireweed looks as if it is the book. As it was published in 1969, that fits in the time frame, and reading some of the text seems slightly familiar, even though its been over 40 years since I read it. Thank you to everyone who replied, I very much appreciate the help in locating the book.
