In 2022 it will be five years since Rebecca (rebeccanyc) passed away. As many of you know, she was an active member here in Club Read and in some other groups here on LT.

As a tribute to her, I set up a thread with a plan to read all the books she still wanted to read with all her friends here at LT. You are welcome to join, even if you did not have the pleasure of knowing her. Because one thing you can be sure of: Rebecca had exceptionally good taste and read a wide variety of books, so there is probably something for everyone.

You can find the HOPE TO READ SOON: a tribute to Rebeccanyc thread here.

As an adjunct to the Graphic Stories thread, I have created a list of works recommended there and on my 2021 thread, where the idea for a graphic novel thread was first discussed.

The list is Club Read's Graphic Stories Recommendations.

Kerry (avatiakh) and I have created a new group dedicated to Holocaust Literature. We have created threads for discussing articles, exposing the fakes, graphic novels, juvenile literature, films & documentaries, the Righteous Among Nations, and more. If this topic interests you please stop by and join the discussions and/or create a thread to track your Holocaust-related reading.

In a bid to be inclusive of friendly lurkers (from 75 Books Group, etc), I had left the group open so that you did not need to be a member to post. There has been enough ugly spam, however, that I have closed the group and you must be a member to post. Hopefully that will help. Please let me know if this causes a problem.

11dchaikin
Jan. 15, 2022, 12:50 pm

hmm. Not a bad thought. My personal preference is to have it open, and deal with the spam, which hasn't been too bad in the past. It does seem a bit worse these past two weeks.

>10 labfs39: Urgh. I had to join to post this objection. :-) The trouble for me is that I use Your Groups for the less active groups, and if I join Club Read then it overwhelms the list (75 Books is even worse). Obviously I will remain joined if I have to; otherwise I can't post to my own thread. Also, I spent years in 75 Books, and a couple of old acquaintances from that group have commented on my Club Read thread and now they can't w/o an extra hurdle. And are spammers stopped so easily?

13labfs39
Bearbeitet: Jan. 15, 2022, 2:48 pm

Hmm, that's what I was afraid of. I don't want to exclude folks. I think what I'll do is open it back up and give it a few weeks. Perhaps the spam will die down as the beginning of the year frenzy eases.

Thanks for the feedback.

For folks who don't want to join, is there a workaround to having all the posts show up in your feed—starring the ones you want to follow and sorting them based on that, maybe?

>16 lisapeet: workaround
I star individual threads that I want to follow in CR & 75. I use Your Groups for groups that I want to follow as a whole, generally groups with relatively few members and infrequent topic-centric posts. I can devise a different system if necessary.

>17 avaland: the socialization of the whole group creates a kind of invisible net
For the years that I kept a thread in the 75 Books group, I followed (and occasionally posted on) a number of threads in Club Read also. I switched to Club Read for the calmer atmosphere, though I still follow a number of threads in 75 Books. My impression is this is fairly common. Aside from spammers who are by nature invasive, people seem to respect the culture of Club Read. Closing the group strikes me as a tad too clubby; it sends a signal of unwelcome to people who are respectful, while as a practical matter doesn't actually exclude people who are disrespectful.

19AnnieMod
Bearbeitet: Jan. 16, 2022, 11:43 pm

>18 qebo: And herein lies the explanation. For you Club Read is just a calmer and smaller version of the 75 group. So you treat it as such. As a result you see nothing wrong in telling us all that if you join, you will see all our threads in your Your Groups and that’s a big problem for you - because you still think of 75 terms. :)

Most of the members of the club did not join it just because it is a scaled down version of something else. We want to see each others’ threads because it is a community - and every new member is welcome and we try to make them feel wanted here. You like hanging around here because of what the club is but you don’t want to be part of the club - because you will be inconvenienced. Which of course is your choice but it still is not how most members use the group.

At the end of the day, the Club will become what its members want it to become. It it drifts enough from what it always has been and truly turn into just a smaller version of 75, I suspect that something else will arise to replace it. Life continues, things change.

>17 avaland: pretty much that. :) Where is the like button when one needs it. :)

20lisapeet
Jan. 17, 2022, 12:54 am

That's actually what I was getting at in terms of a workaround—that it's not necessary to see every single threads from the group in your feed even if you join, so why not join? It's a pretty small bit of friction and makes a moderator's life a lot easier.

I must apologize as I went back to look at the settings of 2009, 2010 and 2021 and the forum, in those years, was set to "anyone can post". We didn't have a spam problem in the early years, though. It's interesting though to look at the membership lists in the two first years. Again, I apologize (my memory is not entirely to be relied on these days). I have removed my passionate address and am down off the soapbox :-)

>21 avaland: Yeah, in the decade or so I've been around, it's never been join-to-post, i.e. I've always been able to post on CR threads. I set things off on a distracting course with my initial aack! to the impact on my method of organization (truly I'm not disdainful of joining; I just don't like unrelated information mixed together and had arrived at a pragmatic solution using limited tools). The more significant problem with join-to-post is its impact on the crossover activity between groups. Many of us follow individuals wherever they create a thread, so 75ers post to CR threads and vice versa. I can see forcing me to join the group where I've created a thread, but forcing occasional visitors to join the group would discourage interaction that has previously been straightforward. What to do about spam, I don't know...

>65 avaland: I am glad Annie Ernaux won the Prize this year. First French woman to win the prize as it has been said all over the media in France (or at least the ones I listen to...).
I've audio-read Les Années/The Years not so long ago (in 2020 according to LT) and absolutely loved it. After that, I decided I had to read more by her and bought La femme gelée/A Frozen Woman, but have not read it since then. The Prize is a good incentive to actually read it!

>68 dchaikin: I guess the safest place to start might be her most famous book, Les Années/The Years that spans over five decades and is an oversee of her life (and her generation, both are intricated), as well as touching on the "transfuge de classe" issue that is so important in her work as well (I have not found an equivalent in English, basically being born in the working class and, thanks to education, becoming an adult in the middle class).
I hope you''ll enjoy reading her, and I would be curious to see other's reviews of her work. I feel her work speaks a lot to French women, so it's really interesting to see her winning an international prize such as the Nobel Prize.

As 2022 comes to a close, so does my first year as admin of Club Read. Before I begin setting up Club Read 2023 (to be released around Dec. 25), I would like to solicit feedback on CR22. Are there things you thought worked well or you wish had worked differently? Feel free to post thoughts here or message me privately.

Also, do we have ideas for theme threads for next year? This year we had the Victorian threads, Graphic Stories, La Cucina, The Greenhouse, the tribute to rebeccanyc, a Decameron Buddy Read, and others. If you would like to curate a themed thread next year, please let me know, and I will give you early access to CR23 so you can get set up. So far, Diane (dianeham) has offered to do a poetry thread.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the conversations this year. It was a robust year for Club Read. I hope to see you all back again for our 15th year!

Lisa

Gosh Lisa I dunno, everything here has been so wonderful! I love all the individual threads, I even put my own in. Might do so next year, tho I still prefer the discussion on the Reading thread. I love all of the books and the chatter and discussions, the laughs. Love how friendly everyone is here, and welcoming. I do wish there was an easy way to find threads and groups but I not sure if you have anything to do about that. Its all been good. Thank you so much for your leadership, and for keeping this place fun and interesting. And on to more reading!

where can I find what other themes have been done in past years?

Re Avid Reader, can we bring up some questions from way back when it first started? We have so many new members now, think we might get some different responses

>95 labfs39: I think you did a mighty fine job, Lisa, well supported by those who ran various specialist threads. No complaints from me.

I think there have been more CR members this year which has meant more threads (or maybe it just feels that way). I feel like I've struggled to keep on top of all the threads more this year. What do people think about capping membership of the group at a certain level so we retain that connection between members rather than it getting bigger and bigger like the 75ers where those relationships can get lost? Maybe that's a selfish thought - just throwing it out there for consideration.

>96 cindydavid4: Thanks, Cindy. There are different ways to get to the Club Read threads. If you click on Groups on the top navigation bar, then Club Read 2022, you will see several pinned threads. This keeps them at the top and is done by me. At the top of the page I linked to some threads as well. Otherwise, you can always use the search box on this page. I find this page helpful when Talk seems overwhelming. Hope this helps.

>97 cindydavid4: As for finding topics in the past, it has been splotchy. I feel as though this year had more than usual, but that is subjective. If you want to browse past years, go to Groups, then use the search box to look up Club Read by year or just Club Read.

>98 AlisonY: I agree there have been a lot of individual threads; Ive pretty much joined threads of the folks here when I joined and havent ventured out; Im sure im missing great things of newer folk but there just isn't time. This is why I prefer to just use the reading thread, I get to meet plenty of people that way and get some good recommendations. I cant imagine a way to limit threads unless each thread lists their reading interests, but not sure how that would work

>98 AlisonY: Thanks, Alison. I was curious to see if our impressions that Club Read was busier than usual this year were supported by the data. Here's what I found.

Although the year is not quite over, the data so far shows that yes, Club Read has grown, but the number of messages has not increased that much over last year (although compared to three years ago, messages have increased by roughly 40%). One reason for the increase in members may be because we had a lot of people join CR this year who were authors of a single book and who never participated. They were just trying to get their name out, I guess.

Like you, I hope that Club Read can keep it's distinctive flavor and not just become 75 Books Lite, but I'm not sure how to do that without closing our doors, which I would prefer not to do.

I've very much enjoyed my time as a member of CR. I would not be in favor of limiting membership. The more the merrier, for all of me. I don't feel pressure to keep up with every single thread, though. That's just me and my one vote, if we're voting. Or my one member's personal perspective if we aren't. :)

Hmm, hard to say without a deep dive, but
~68 members (out of 170) created threads of their own and they average about 20-25 unique posters on each.
The community threads have slightly more (23-27). The tribute to rebeccanyc has 34 unique posters.

I have a question for all you techies out there. I have over 850 children's books in a couple of collections. I am considering moving these into a separate account. Is there a way to export by collection, or do I need to export everything then upload just the collections I want into the new account? Has anyone done this recently? How clean is the resulting data?

128AnnieMod
Dez. 29, 2022, 8:58 pm

>127 labfs39: You can pick which collections, tags, “books added after” subset and even specific search result to export during the export. However… You may be able to export but importing them on the other side is not going to be trivial: if they have ISBNs, they will be looked up in your sources so your data will get overwritten in fields that sources have information for; if they don’t have ISBNs, you will need to reformat the export to use the universal import special csv file format to get them cleanly (and only the fields that format allows will be imported.

In either case, it won’t be trivial to say the least. You will probably spend more time fixing them than it will take to just readd them, especially if you care about the details. And at least a few will need to be combined (and a few will land in wierd works and will need to be rescued). The lack of export/import loop in LT is one of the features that was never there and due to how the site works unlikely to show up soon.

If you are moving them so they do not mess up your recommendations, that can be fixed in a single account (you decide which collections are used so if you either isolate them and mark that one not to be used or uncheck the checkbox for all collections and build one which contains the books you want to be used for recommendations, you will be all set).

>128 AnnieMod: Thanks, Annie. Sort of what I thought. I was hoping there would be an easy, peasy, clean way. I do have the collections set to not be included in recommendations etc. The problem is that you can't select more than one collection at a time to search. For instance, if I wanted to search for five star books that I have read, ideally I would search the my library, read but unowned, and previously owned collections at the same time. But I can't. So when I search all books, I get a lot of five star kids books, that I am not interested in. Ah well.

I'd probably create a new collection in which I'd include all the books I ever read except the kids books. There's a lot you can do this way and it's fairly quick and easy to do if you use the Power edit function. Just a thought.

And I'd like to join the others in thanking you for this great year here at LT. I may have been much less present than I would have liked, but it was always a safe and fun haven to drop into. You did a great job.

>132 labfs39: Actually, if the Kids books are already in a single collection, that can be done very quickly. Add a tag/collection to all books you had read via Power Edit (one collection at a time if they are in multiple collections for example). Then open the Kids collection and remove the tag/collection from all books in that collection. All set. :)
