The ancient custom of specific daily prayers was renewed or "restored," in conjunction with the Second Vatican Council through its Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the apostolic constitution Laudis canticum, and the Decree of April 11, 1971, from the Office of the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship.
I pray others will contribute to discussion of the history and practice of these prayers and readings. Over the years I've been given a variety of prayer books and Breviaries, as well as several separate versions of the Hours and the Divine Office. It is a wonderful feeling to participate in the universal prayer of the Church, yet also sometimes frustratingly complicated and always time consuming.
