An Alphabet for Gourmets by M. F. K. Fisher 2005

This is more a book of reminiscences, anecdotes and philosophy of life than a cookbook, but recipes are included. Written in 1949, it is quite dated with the domestic life it depicts and the social mores that are expected, but entertaining for all that if read in small doses.

Alphabetically listed are 26 words that are randomly associated with gastronomy. A four or five page ramble around the topic is followed by a recipe that is usually only vaguely associated with it. The recipes vary from the impossible (calf’s head a la tortue – bone, blanch and trim a calf’s head) and a diabetic disaster (raspberries romanoff – 1/4 cup of powdered sugar) to the banal (scrambled eggs) and the yukky (fried egg sandwich). Some of the topics chosen for a letter are quite unusual and unexpected (eg. P – peas, M – monastic).

The xx + 239 page book is introduced by Paul levy and has delightful colour illustrations by Ian Beck at the head of each alphabetic section, as well as a few tailpieces when required. The title page is also illustrated.

It is quarter bound in green cloth with paper sides printed with a colour design by the artist. The endpapers and slipcase (22.4x17.1cm.) are a plain dark green.

>1 wcarter: Delightful is certainly the right word for those illustrations. I'll have to pick this one up.
