BingoDog planning thread

It's that time again, time to get your ideas in for squares to go on the Bingo card. The middle square is always "Read a CAT" so we're after 24 squares.

We have tended not to use squares from the last 2 years, these are posted in the next comment, for reference. I'll use this thread to collate ideas, then whittle the list to ensure there's a mixture of themes: cover, title, author, content for the final 25.

I suggest that we have maybe 3 weeks for discussion, then we'll hopefully have the final list ready for the cards to be designed and the marker magic to happen in December. I have a manic week 13th to 17th, so I'll not be doing anything decisive before the weekend of 18th/19th November.

I generally find the ‘published in xx’ really difficult, so would prefer to avoid these. Did notice I wasn’t the only one from this years BingoDog thread (several discussions on the ‘bestseller from 20 years ago’).

My suggestions:
Paper
A title or a cover containing a fruit
Epistolary or diary
Told in 2. person
twins
A book set in the future
The making of …
A puzzle or quest
A Book set in a country you’ve been to

The good thing about the BingoDOG is that it sends your reading off in directions you wouldn't normally go. I don't usually read SFF but have discovered some great books in that genre. However, "dragons" is very specific. I just couldn't!

We've done this more than 3 years. >:-) I have a list of squares going back to 2018.

>13 amberwitch:/>14 LadyoftheLodge: The best seller from 20 years ago has proven rather more problematic. In previous years the square has been phrased "published in a year ending 24", meaning that you've got a range of options (2024, 1924, 1824 etc etc etc)

Only one "on the cover" suggestion so far.

Self-published books would be a challenge for those of us who rely on our local libraries to get our books. They don’t get reviewed as widely, and they’re less likely to be available from the major library vendors, so they’re less likely to be purchased by most public libraries.

As for “worst” anything, that’s not a word I’d look forward to seeing on a bingo card in any context. The idea, it seems to me, is to provide a fun bit of encouragement for people to think outside their usual reading boxes, and “worst” anything isn’t very encouraging.

27amberwitch
Okt. 29, 2023, 2:14 pm

>26 KeithChaffee: Agree with both point.

28VivienneR
Okt. 29, 2023, 2:44 pm

The intention is that the Bingo card is to create some challenge but allow everyone the chance to complete their Bingo cards. Restricting genres, languages, formats, etc. will make it impossible for some participants to complete the card.

I never read fantasy, science fiction, comic books, graphic novels, or languages other than English so these would be blanks for me (e.g. Hugo or Nebula award winner).

To my recollection, "the year you were born" is rejected often because it is personal information. It's often been changed slightly so that in 2023 we had "an author with the same zodiac sign".

Yes, some squares are more difficult to fill than others, but should still be possible for everyone.

29Helenliz
Okt. 29, 2023, 3:24 pm

>26 KeithChaffee: Self published. I would agree, that can be difficult to source. For me as well.
>26 KeithChaffee: The word "worst": I can understand that perspective. I'd suggest a rephrasing if any of the current candidates using that went on the Bingo card.

>28 VivienneR: the other language does say "originally written in a language other than your own. No requirement to read in a foreign language, a book translated into the language of your choice would fit. It's certainly a square we have used before.

>28 VivienneR: Hugo/nebula awards winners. I tend to avoid selecting genre specific squares for that reason. we've used "award winners" before with no specific award mentioned.

>28 VivienneR:, Comics/graphic novels. I've put these with the other suggestions relating to format. We may end up with one, or we could go with "read a book in a non-traditional format" which might cover poetry, plays, graphic novels etc. In think most genres have short story collections, so that one would be broadly applicable.

>28 VivienneR: Year of birth. It gets suggested regularly, but agree that we tend not to use it.

Ideas still welcome, or potential modifications to makes those suggested more broadly applicable, if people feel some are a bit narrow, difficult or overly specific.

>28 VivienneR: I also do not read the genres you list (unless absolutely necessary) although I don't mind reading translated books but translated titles was in the 2022 BingoDOG.

Several years ago I think that year you were born was changed has birthday near yours (did not need to be same year?). However, I agree about not needing to reveal personal information.

31pamelad
Bearbeitet: Okt. 29, 2023, 3:53 pm

>28 VivienneR: I agree, except for "Book originally written in another language than your own" because I read a lot of them. However, in 2022 we had "book in translation", which is the same.

For science fiction there are classics, like 1984 and Brave New World, but they probably pre-date the awards mentioned.

Squares depending on content are often difficult, because you don't always know in advance e.g. twins, and there might not be many books to choose from.

It took me such a long time to write this post (I left it to do something else) that >29 Helenliz: and >30 sallylou61: covered most of it.

None of those are "non-traditional" formats. Poetry and plays predate the novel, and the graphic novel is nearly 200 years old.

Thank you very much for taking on this "challenge" of arriving at a BindoDOG card.

Looking at the list of suggestions in >1 Helenliz:, in my opinion a number of them are duplicates/near duplicates from this year's BingoDOG.

Something you wouldn't usually read = topic you don't usually read
Title contains a number -- Title contains a number or quantity
Set in the country -- Small town or rural setting

What does makes you cry mean -- wouldn't you possibly need to read a number of books to find one that makes you cry -- also some people cry much more easily than others do

>38 VivienneR: "But I agree with the point that the card should be possible for any participants to complete. It's supposed to be fun, not work or stress."

Maybe it's just a difference in philosophy. For me, part of the fun is that I will probably wind up reading two or three books that I might otherwise never have picked up, and I don't find that stressful in the least. This group is the Category CHALLENGE, after all, and if you're just going to wind up reading 25 books you were already going to read, where's the challenge? What's the point?

To be sure, I wouldn't want an entire bingo card filled with "17th-century Qatari LGBTQ+ memoir," but if there are a few boxes that push me outside my usual boundaries, that's a good and interesting thing. Maybe I'll be bored by where they push me; maybe I'll be thrilled. Either way, I'll have learned something.

>39 LadyoftheLodge: "What are some books that are told in second person (which would be "you")?"

Jay McInerny's Bright Lights, Big City would be an example. It opens "You are not the kind of guy who would be at a place like this at this time of the morning." Italo Calvino's If On a Winter's Night a Traveler is largely in second person.

>42 KeithChaffee: The challenging part for me is when I have to go searching at the library for a book to fit a square when I don't already have one among my hundreds of books. I think that's the fun - and inspiring - side to Bingo. Same goes for all the KITs and CATs.

Regarding "if you're just going to wind up reading 25 books you were already going to read, where's the challenge? What's the point?" I just had a look at my Bingo card this year and 13 were books that were not on my shelves or reading plan, and that I probably wouldn't have picked up otherwise. There's the challenge.

>38 VivienneR: Thanks. >:-) Hoping your day/week/month all get better.

The problem with how far out of your comfort zone does the card push you is that we all have different comfort zones in the first place. What may look easy to some can be something that another would simply never read. There are ways that an individual could make their own card more of a challenge to themselves. I have, in the past, filled mine just using women writers, for instance.

I'm in the difficult position of trying to please all of the people, which I know to be impossible. It's just a question of how many of you I'm going to piss off to some degree >;-)

>45 Helenliz: I doubt you will upset anyone here with any of the choices you make:)

I really appreciate the effort of putting together and hosting this challenge, and the reading company and inspiration throughout the year.

This is a very nice way of expanding my reading, and way of seeing my reading in another light, but not anything that can piss me of - some squares I get a lot of reading done for, some none at all.

If it's simply something that's in translation, that can be almost any book and definitely can be a book that is definitely originally written in your language but that just happens to be popular enough to be translated.

>32 KeithChaffee: Fair, perhaps the wording was not great, but the point was to venture out from just a "normal book" and introduce some other options into the card.

>45 Helenliz: You've ran this for years. I'm sure that whatever card you come up with will be fantastic and fun! People will get out of it the same energy they put in. I wouldn't stress.

I'll aim to cull the list to a perfect 24 this weekend. Any more thoughts or comment to make, get them in. >:-)

>67 Xtrangeloop: Ahh, OK. More a book written in a different cultural tradition rather than one purely in translation. That does make a different spin on it.

List has been culled. 24 topics selected and sent off to Christina for cards making.

I've taken on board some of the difficult to access comments, discounted anything that would appear to duplicate the CATs that have been selected and then just gone with a selection that I hope gives some balance & variety. Thank you for all the suggestions & comments.

For item #24 "three-word title", can we ignore "a Novel" after the three words or is that really part of the title?

Adding my thanks to Helenliz for all her hard work! I now have the final list of squares, but I may not be able to design the cards right away because I'll be traveling over the (US) Thanksgiving holiday. Still, I hope to get them done and over to LShelby soon!

At a first glance I thought that this Bingo was a bit more challenging than in previous years, but upon a closer look I saw that I have something on my shelf for every square. Now I just need to read all of those books ;-)

Thank you to everyone involved in making BingoDOG happen! It is one of my favourite parts of the Category Challenge!

>96 Helenliz: I've had a go at setting up a wiki page using the 2023 Wiki as a guide. https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/2024_BingoDOG

It's a start! Please let me know if you want changes e.g, there seem to be excessive numbers in the Contents. Would anyone would like to fix that?

I've put a number for each square, but I don't think you need them. Perhaps use them as place-holders for now and delete them when you add the square descriptions.

Here are the Bingo cards for 2024.
The card images (that's where the real work is) were provided by christina_reads -- Thank you!

<img src="http://www.lshelby.com/Utilities/Bingo/bingocardC.php?type=CAT2024-3&color=orange&markers=5-8-17-15-21-1">

Don't forget that you can change the color of the markers to any of the following:

Two I have failed to report:

My Name is Barbra by Barbara Streisand for title with a name in it. Long, almost 1000 pages but very interesting and well written.

Murder Most Royal by SJ Bennett for three word titile. A fun light series where Queen Elizabeth directs investigations into crimes while staying in the background. It's always funny when law inforcement comes to give the Queen an update on the investigation when she knows more than they do.
