What is the workflow supposed to be for patrons having checked out books?

Once a patron has placed a hold on a book, it appears to me that the only way for that patron to check the book out is to first release the hold, then check it out. It seems to me like the patron who has placed the hold should be able to directly check the book out, but I don't see how to make that happen. Am I missing something, or should I rephrase this as a feature request?

The perfect implementation of this for my usecase would be to have something like this language appear on the page for a held book, under the "Status: On Hold" indicator while no one is signed in:

"If you are currently have this book on hold, you may *link:Sign In* to check it out".

Or something close to that.
