Listening to The Couple at Number 9 and am glad that I have borrowed it from the library since the main character Saffron (oy vey, what a name, but at least they call her Saffy which rhymes with Daffy which would have been a better name) is driving me nuts with her idiocy. The other characters and timelines/storylines are ok though.

I'm reading C is for Corpse by Sue Grafton. I find the series is picking up from the first two and more dynamic.

I finished Lady in Armor, a 1940s crime novel about a woman who, after being elected sheriff, takes on the corrupt and deadly leadership of a small southern town. It's implausible but entertaining, or would be if not for the demeaning racial stereotypes of blacks common for the era.

I'm reading The Brethren by John Grisham - I'm loathe to call it a thriller at this stage because it's moving pretty slowly with two different plots unfolding separately. I have faith they'll come together at some point; it's the only thing holding my curiosity. Although, I am entertained by the CIA shenanigans.

I just finished What Happened to Nina? by Dervla McTiernan and was a bit disappointed in it, although I've really liked her other novels. This one was far too predictable and just not very thrilling.

Finished an easy thing, the first Hector Belascoaran Shayne novel. I adore this anarchist detective as much as he adores Mexico city. Nice to finally find a decent English translation.

Just finished Julia Heaberlin's We are All the Same in the Dark which was extremely good even if I did figure out the real bad guy in the end. Distinctive characters, atmosphere and narrative style.

Recent reads:

The Satapur Moonstone (A Perveen Mistry Novel Book 2) by Sujata Massey
The Searcher by Tana French
In Plain Sight (Detective Clare Mackay Book 2) by Marion Todd
The It Girl by Ruth Ware
The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner.

All 3 to 3.5 stars.

I seem to be in a grumpy reading slump at the moment. Perhaps because it is nearly winter in my part of the world, and I dislike cold, damp weather... I even even read outside my usual genre (Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus - it was Ok) to mix things up a little, but to no avail.

Currently reading: The Waiter (Detective Kamil Rahman 1) by Ajay Chowdhury . Good so far, especially for a first novel.

Reading Death of Riley, a cozy by Rhys Bowen. I think I liked her Royal Spyness series better, but this is OK; set in turn of the 20th century New York.

Just reread the laughing policeman, one of the best police procedurals of all time.

Just finished #4 in Richard Osman 's Thursday Murder Club mystery series: The Last Devil to Die and loved it, as I did all the others.
