I loved Secret Garden when I listened to it years ago. The narrator was so good and listening brought new life to the story. I can't wait to read Fox Wife

Saturday Night Report
Books read from: Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability by Amy Chua. I am listening to Little Thieves by Margaret Owen.

Books finished: Rose For Winter by Laurie Lee

Book Thoughts: I have about 25 pages left in World on Fire and hope to finish it tomorrow. I will then devote most of my reading time to Book of Form and Emptiness. World on Fire is nonfiction and it demands lots of concentration while I am reading. It is very good and offers more of an explanation of global markets than did Thomas Friedman's book on globalization. Chau spends lots of pages explaining why globalization of democracy and free-markets won't get most of these countries to a developed country level. One of the chapters is titled "Why They Hate Us" and the author explains why the U.S. interference in undeveloped countries is viewed as interference and that makes America the enemy. This book was written in 2003 and I now wonder what this author would say about our invasive wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Non-Book activities: I baked bread today and the house smells really good. I am going to supper tonight and my contribution will be the bread. I didn't get to listen to my Saturday morning NPR news because for some odd reason the radio station quit broadcasting. Later in the morning I heard voices in the house and then realized that the radio had come back on. It was 3 hours after it shut off. weird.

Weekend wrap-up
Books read from: Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability by Amy Chua. I am starting Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage: The Real Story Behind the Wild West's Greatest Tale by Stephen J. May. I am listening to Little Thieves by Margaret Owen.

Books finished: Rose For Winter by Laurie Lee World on Fire by Amy Chua

Book Thoughts: I finally finished World on Fire I found it to be a very good book on the reasons why spreading free-market democracy doesn't work. It was written by an academic and clearly intended for an academic and political policy making audience. It was published in 2003 before the Forever War, but even so, it has several great observations and examples of how we could do it better. There is a longer review of this title over on the 75'ers Nonfiction Challenge, so if you are curious about the book take a look over there.

Non-Book activities: The bread I baked was delicious. I am going to make that recipe again. The supper with friends was delightful. Great food and great company. What could be better? I won't be posting again tomorrow morning as I packed my bag today and finished stuffing the car with my stuff. Tomorrow I am heading off to Kansas for two weeks. I will be back on next weekend but my writing will be short as I will be attending my 50 year High School Class reunion. I will also have guests in the house for the weekend. It will be fun but long.

Time reading today: 1 hour
Time reading this weekend: 3 hours

Time posting:

Food: My regular Sunday morning cappuccino and lunch at the local Indian restaurant. I will eat a nice slice of my lovely bread tomorrow for breakfast and then take off.
