Introduction Thread

Introduce yourself, tell us about who you are and who your favorite less-than-well-known authors and books are!

Charles De Lint has become a true favorite in the fantasy category... although it is probably more like magical realism.
All time favorite is the satire of Terry Pratchett.

Me? middle age person, magical in nature, prefer the strange in books as in life.

(actually, the user name is for my husband who shares this link, and the library. He is in fact a blind librarian)

Karen Miller is a favourite fantasy author, along with many others. Janny Wurts - here on LT - probably wouldn't want to be described as less-than-well-known, but isn't totally mainstream is another.

SF wise C J Cherryh and Reynolds are favourites.

One of my favourite less well-know fantasy authors is Andrzej Sapkowski (which doesn't appear to touchstone ...). He's well-known outside of the English language readership but his work has only just started to be translated - I have the good fortune to have been able to read some of his books in his native Polish but I'm looking forward to reading Blood of Elves in translation ... it's sitting on my bookshelf tempting me away from my classic lit binge.

As for sci-fi, not really less well know but I'm hooked on James White at the moment (space and medical emergencies ... what's not to love!)

I've just finished the english version of Blood of Elves a few days ago. I wasn't blown away, but it wasn't bad. Especially if you've ever played The Witcher PC game, which was based on the book/series.

Will be very interested to hear your thoughts on how well the translation has been done.

I have a Polish husband who loves Sapkowski (hence my introduction to him) so I've been treated to the super-dooper-Polish-special-I-bought-a- new-graphics-card-just-to-play-it- Edition of the game ... which I haven't yet been able to play because I can't lever my husband off the computer long enough ;) I've read his two collections of short stories in Polish but I wanted to wait with the novels because I don't always get the best out of this kind of book as the language used is uncommon and I have to have a dictionary to hand. The translation of those was OK - a bit of the humour got lost though.

There's an online challenge version of the PC game called Versus which is a distracting way of filling time when LT isn't completely absorbing. I'm witcher_fox there. You don't nee to have played the main game at all.

Impressed at reading Polish! It can't be the easiest of languages even with a dictionary and native husband!
