I know LT already has a feature to show the most popular books by title and author, but those lists represent the most common titles or authors, whereas the purpose of this group is to create lists of our favorites. Hopefully, the LT programming wizards will later find a way to mine the data and compile a single list for each category.

Same here - well do I remember nights as a kid when I had to put horror novels in another room after scaring myself too much to share headspace with them while asleep :) Once wrote a 15 page letter to a schoolfriend after being too scared to turn out the light after staying up late with the Shining...
My list is:
The Shining
'Salem's Lot
The Haunting of Hill House
Songs of a Dead Dreamer
Hideaway
Ghost Story
The Hungry Moon
Dark Companions
Ghost Stories of an Antiquary
The Watch House
Just realised that I left House of Leaves off here - would probably replace Hideaway which I enjoy for its smart, brave heroine and the adrenalin of her resourceful rescue attempt, than for the horror aspect anyway.

Okay, this is a sickness. I have literally added all of your top tens to my amazon wish list. :P
question though--would you guys recommend getting Ghost Stories of an Antiquary or should I go on MarketPlace and get a copy of the The Collected Ghost Stories of M. R. James?
(someone in a review recommends to)
thanks again, guys, ALWAYS on the lookout for great horror!
(i had typed out my list, but it's pretty embarassing right now--mostly King. Give me a few months and then I'll respond!)

King is awesome! I had not read anything for a long time, but now I'm reading The Talisman, which he wrote with Peter Straub. I don't know enough about Straub to pick out his elements, but there is a lot of King's flavor in there. The epic quest, the good/evil battle, the coming-of-age tale, the harrowing road trip - it's all in there. I am reminded of The Stand and It, as well as other author's works, like Clive Barker's Imajica and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Sawyer is also the name the Talisman's character).

you guys put me to shame! as a previous blogger wrote, I am too limited to list anything in horror. give me awhile (maybe the restof my life) and i could do it, but for fantasy and horror right now, i'm limited to simak for the former and king and koontz for the latter. (I mean, put them together and you have more than 100 books)
