I have a print from Stranger in a Strange Land by Caldwell, signed by the artist.

Which one is that? I see that you have multiple copies & covers. How about adding the artist's name to your tags? :-)

Fifth Horseman - Walter Harris. Panther 1976. Cover art Jim Burns.
I bought the original artwork before I bought the book. Indeed I bought the book only because I had the picture. I can assure you this is a book that should only be bought for the cover. Part of the cover forms the background on my computer.
I also have scetch Jim Burns did for a Hawksbill Station cover but it's considerably different from the final cover and not the one on my copy.

Jim Burns is great. Wish I could get a better look at that cover.
I can see buying a book for the cover. Years back, I saw the original art (price in the thousands) of Mike Whelan's cover for an Asimov novel; one of the later Foundation ones, I think. It was breathtaking. (Robot, AIR, standing in ruined temple-like structure with Doric (?) columns. Perfectly caught the texture of ancient marble columns. Anyone know which book?) I would have bought the book, or a print, to have a mini-copy of the painting, but the effect was lost in reduction.
I have the original of Vincent Di Fate's cover for Carve the Sky. Not my favorite of his, but I was at an auction, and my budget could manage it. I bought the book to have Vin inscribe it.
I have bunches of prints by various artists. I'll have to sort out which were cover art, and for which books.

I have a print of Tim White's cover art for Pratchett's The Dark Side Of The Sun - which is the one with a mechanical looking insect on a leaf.
Unfortunately I cannot afford Jim Burns (or probably anyone else's) original artwork - I saw how much he was trying to flog it for at Interaction.

Wow, almost two years later I come across this thread!
We have a print of Michael Whelan's cover for Clarke's Songs of Distant Earth, and a signed print of Donato Giancola's cover for David Brin's Otherness.
But the best is a Michael Whelan original of a color composition study he did for the cover of Joan Vinge's Tangled Up in Blue. We also have two Bob Eggleton originals, but they're not of book covers.
Our house goes bookcase, art, bookcase, art, bookcase art.... Not much in the way of real furniture -- it's all hand-me-downs. We have our priorities!

I don't own any original cover art but I'm a bit of a fantasy fan and there was a time when, if the cover was done by Michael Whelan, it was a major influence on whether I bought the book or not. Guess in the back of my mind, I figured that if they cared enough to have him do the art, it had to be good.

I feel the same way about Kelly Freas covers. I have prints for three covers that he did. I also have four original paintings by Mark Rogers. None of them are cover illustrations, but one did end up inside a book.

I just picked up this mysterious painting. I have no idea what book it is for. This is written on the back. I've tried Rickover Plot, McHover Plot, Nickhover Plot, no luck. Found a couple of "S. Holland" authors but no one that look they would write something like this. Anyone have any ideas?
Also just got the cover art for The Winds of Night by Anne Maybury. I've collected original comic book art in the past, these purchases are a new thing for me.

I own several dozen original cover paintings all completed for the novels of SF writer Robert Silverberg. My favorites are the ones by Jim Burns.

I don't have any original 'book' cover art; but, I do own the cover art to the 1980s Commodore 64 arcade game Implosion a 2'10"x2' framed original that sits above my collection of retro gaming consoles.
Its very crude. But, that is all part of it's charm.
I realise that this is probably the wrong forum for this. ;)
n.b. Yes - I just realised this post is in fact 'two years' old! and not just 'two days'.
