The K 2 has new software v.2.3 that has some new things;

Built-in PDF reader: Your Kindle can now display PDF documents without losing the formatting of the original file. Send PDF documents directly to your Kindle (via your Kindle address) or drag and drop PDF files from your computer to your Kindle (when connected via USB).

Manual screen rotation: The Kindle screen can now manually rotate between portrait and landscape views so you can see the entire width of a web page or magnify the page of a PDF file. The page-turn buttons work the same in either orientation, and the 5-way controller movements are switched to match the orientation.

And a few other things I have not yet gotten to.

The new software was downloaded to my K2 yesterday.
Looks good so far, but I have not tried all the new features yet.

I got the 2.5 update on my K2i on Friday before last. When I looked at my Kindle and saw that it was updating, I nearly broke my face grinning. Boy, was I ever excited! Collections! Zooming! Social media! zOMG!

By the time I'd finished my tea it had rebooted and I started playing with it... and, um, yeah. Pretty cool.

The Collections feature is good. - It's awkward to add books to a collection, but once you spend the time you have a much more organized library.... Remember to sort by Collections to make it work.

Twitter and Facebook. - I am a social media junkie. I tweet all the time, and I check FB at least daily. I was excited about the social networking, to say the least.

Sending an item from the Kindle to Twitter results in a tweet that looks like this: http://twitter.com/goblinbox/status/13950454007.

Not very awesome. You have to click through to see the quote. I didn't bother trying the FB post.

The website. - Okay, I have to admit that http://kindle.amazon.com is kinda cute. But what does it do? I mean, really? I logged in and classified all my books into reading, read, to read, and quit reading. And... now what? I have virtually no reason to ever visit the site again.

Zooming. - Handy for viewing images, but if you have a very dense PDF full of text it won't help with that.

Password protection. - Love it! I was traveling over the weekend and passworded my Kindle in case it was lost or stolen.

Popular highlights. - This feature is, well, stupid. IMO.

Font sizes. - Are there now more HUGE fonts? Not useful to me, really.

If there are any other features, I haven't noticed them.

Over all, this update has brought the Kindle into 2010, sure, but while I approve of the ideas I feel that the implementation still needs a little tweaking.

3>> I still haven't gotten my download.

How does the Collections feature work? Is it something you organize from the Kindle website? If so, then that suggests to me that you can only sort books into Collections if you've bought them from Amazon.

Or do you do your sorting right on the Kindle? If so, I'd assume I can also sort books that I've downloaded from Feedbooks|Mobile and other freebie non-Amazon sources.

All I really care very much about is being able to sort. How good is this feature?

CurrerBell You sort them on the Kindle itself, which is time-consuming. When you're done, though, you have a home page with folders and periodicals. It's lovely.

1. You can't put periodicals into Collections. I have no idea why I can't have a "News/RSS" folder, but there it is.
2. You have to tab up to the very top of the home layout and sort by Collections or you'll end up with Home page that still displays the individual items PLUS the Collections folders.

You haven't gotten your download? Lame! Remember to remove any hacks you might have installed; if you don't, you won't get the update.

5 >> Thanks. I'll wait another week or two, then call Customer Service if I still don't have it. (I don't have any hacks.)

I've only got two periodicals (the Analog and Asimov sci-fi magazines), and I get them both on my K1, so they won't matter.

I do have over 600 files on my Home screen, but still, I've got over 600 megs of free hard-drive space so there should be plenty of room for any software download.
