I personally like it because it is a thrilling, hold-on-to-the-edge-of-your-seat series. I am not a huge fan of romance either, but the Hunger Games has just right amount; not too much, not too little. It is also a book about friendship, good moral values, and it has a female protagonist. It is also one of the only series that I just HAVE to come back again and again to, and the others are Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore, the tortallan books starting with Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce, and books by Enid Blyton from when I was 7.
3FantasyGirl2
Why do you like the book?
5FantasyGirl2
Try
8FantasyGirl2
I agree.
9Babbe2
yea that makes sense but see there is more than just the intensity there is everything else that goes with it, hard to explain in words you know
10FantasyGirl2
You're right.
12bananak
yeah i also agree its like, theres never a dull moment, there's always something that keeps u reading whether its the intensity, romance, awe, everything
14Puppydogluver

Hmm...question...are you an avid reader? Would you call yourself a bookworm?
Hmm...question...are you an avid reader? Would you call yourself a bookworm?
28FantasyGirl2
Me too! All my classmates joke that is they lock me in huge room full of books, without food or water, I will still be happy.
I always have at least 1 book at arm's reach. When the teacher stops to catch her breath for a minute, I am reading. While they are taking attendence, I am reading. In the car, I am reading. During lunch. After a test. After school, before my ride comes.Just now, before I opened my laptop. Even on the computer, I go look for something to read on books.google.com Reading, reading, reading. After a while,I had to go look for words that mean 'lover of books' or 'reader' and is stronger than 'bookworm'. I found it: bibliophile.
Sometimes I wish my name was "Iqrah". It means "read".

I can say that my love of reading is heridatiary, (is that how u spell it?), because my grandparents, and parents are/were avid readers. So are my sibblings.

35FantasyGirl2
I always have a book to school too. My teachers tell me to socialise. I then go out into the courtyard to read, in peace and quiet. Cafetarias are loud, and annoying.
36bananak

37Puppydogluver

41FantasyGirl2
I don't really get to choose cause i'm a freshman in HS. But we have a small garden, and I'm allowed to go there. Is quiet there because it is windy and cold in autumn/winter/early spring. ie, most of the school year. So i basically have about 40x40 ft to myself. And a friend who sometimes comes out with me.
43FantasyGirl2
jr high school? what grades would that be?
I'm in 9th. My sis's in 12th.

I think this is what persuaded my sis:
My friend was bored and borrowed the book and was reading it. three minutes later, the bell rung. She had read a couple of pages only. But she must have liked them, because she gives my back the book with the statement "I hate you. I want to read that book."
Later, we meet my sister, and I ask my friend to tell my sis ow much she liked it. She told her. My sister concented, 10 min later.

You see, we have all been posting fora while now, nd are familiar with each other, so sometimes we might say random things in random posts. You'll have to readll of the threads and make note of who saya what to get our bickering.
92FantasyGirl2
Yeah, we pretty much do.
I'll tell you about them to make it easier on you.
babanak and Babbe2 know each other, go to the same school. Puppydogluver is a 6th grader who's really smart. She has 7th grade-level classes. I'm, well, me. I'm a 9th grader who skipped a grade when i was in elementary school. I came to the US from my homecountry, Burma, in the middle of 8th grade. I was persuading my sister to read the HG series, and succeded.
How about you?

Education. I come from Burma. There, education isn't worth it after, say, 9th grade, in my private school. Gov. school is basically useless. Its a communist country, see.
So my family went to Pakistan, where my mother was born and her father has a huge there. Pakistan had very good collages/univerisities. As good as Princeton and Harvard and all that. Two years later tho, we had to go back to Burma, cause me and my sibblings passports were going to become expired. Everything in Burma is slow paced, tho, so we had to wait a year to ge them renewed. When we did, things in Pakistan had become pretty harsh, so my uncle and grandfather (same one who invited us to Pakistan earlier) told us to come live here. SO here we live, with our uncle's family, in his house.
And other than that, my family is one that loves travelling. We like to visit places. I love travelling, but it does make things more complicated. sigh.

Why r u in California?
98Mariah7
Wow! So your parents are still in Burma?
I lived in the same small town in California for my whole life, on the same property(different houses) with the rest of my family(aunt, cousin, grandma, grandpa). And my mom and dad got tired of all the tension. So we moved to Idaho, where my other grandma lives, to a big city. Been here for almost a year, but its still really rough for me.

No, my mon has always moved with us. My father has commitments in Burma, so he is there and frequentle gives 3 wk to 5 wk visits. Usually around the time we have a week long holiday, so we can actually spend time together.

Your complaining reminds me of Captin Hook from Peter Pan 2.
"Pan!!! Help me!!"
"You know what they say Hook. A good captain always goes down with his ship."
"But I don't wanna be a good captain!!!"

But u do have complaining rights..... Just make sure the Capitol doesn't hear you....don't want to become an Avox, do we?

I like it because you're always making predictions. Also, it's not one of those oh-so-serious books. Suzanne Collins adds some humor to the book. ;)
116FantasyGirl2
Ahhh, yes, good point. You like this series? Try Maximum Ride. They are similar, but not the same.
I also love them 'cause ther're unpredictible. Somethimes you read a book, and within the first two chapters, you knwo what the book going to be about, what going to happen. THG and MR are different. You really can't tell what going to happen......until it sneaks up and goes 'boo!' in your face. Loooove it.

I pretty much love everything about the book except it seems like she doesn't explain everything as to where I can see a picture precisely. sometime I had to just go on the internet to see what she was talking about.
118BookLover287

I know. Rue was unpredictable, and seriously, I did NOT see the epic ending coming. (The mutant wolves)

I disagree. Suzanne Collins did everything right.

I think every author has their flaw. Don't get me wrong I love the books but sometimes they went a bit hazy.
120FantasyGirl2
She wasn't hasty, but I would have liked a longerish story, simply because i loved it and couldn't believe it was over. Then i found CF.
The point of good books is that you DO NOT see the epic end comming. Otherwise the story is boring. What's fun in a story when u know what's going to happen?? I am happy u agree with me. :D I happy.
And I agree. Everything was perfect. i would not change a single word in it. It was perfectly written. Collins is a natural.
But I suppose everyone has a slightly different like/dislike

Exiled into space is better. Why should ppl in other countries suffer??

Or, maybe this is too horrible- have to do a "hunger games" of their own. As punishment for not liking the book

127BookLover287
I could. Susan and a cross between Edmund and Peter hunt in the woods. Susan's little sister, a mini her, gets picked and Susan takes her place. Hagrid with no beard and make-up falls down, and Rita Skelter takes her and a muscular brown-haired guy to the capitol.
I was taking the names of the charcters and replacing them with the cast list. Peeta, I really dont know

WE mean to excile those who criticize it, saying they HATED the book and it was horrible.
Or at least send then to mental institutes for treatment. Those ppl must be senile.

I like how you can connect it to other things EASILY.
Example: Glee and The Hunger Games are connected because two charcters(Guidance counselor and Peeta) are crushing on a person who is already with someone.

150BookLover287
149> Sorry. Anyways, The Hunger Games can be compared to real life things, and other books, tv shows, and movies.
Like, if you were crushing on someone who already had a girlfriend(or boyfriend), you could connect to Peeta, since he knows that Katniss is with Gale.(Or, SHOULD BE).
Hopefuly, no one will be able to relate to the part of the book where 22 people die by the same cause. That would be scary

You're right.
And right again. Hopefully, no one will ever, ever have to. But it happens all the time. War, poverty, sickness, natural disasters.

152HannaMeads
150> it seem like you could connect that to a lot of different movies/books. It's not like it uncommon.
153FantasyGirl2
Well, all books are based off some aspect of human life. Even the ones in which the characters are animals. So we can always relate to them in some way
154HannaMeads
I base a lot of my writing from my dreams, they usually make a pretty good story after a little bit of editing.
155sarahy
i like the hunger game series because of how real the author made it. you would think that suzanne collins has been in her own hunger games. lots of people liked the books because they could feel bad for katniss. a huge part of the books are emotion, too. katniss being torn apart when rue, then prom, dies. her heart aching between peeta and gale. lots of things were very easy to relate to, then stretched. love. death. survival. acceptance. the cruelty and unfairness of life.
ok, that should sufficiently bore anyone who reads it. thanks for putting up with me!

Haha, I just started reading mockinjay again and... honestly... Katniss annoys me... constantly complaining.. and really... how hard would it be to be the rebels mockingjay for the good of the country??? I don't know. Just what I was thinking. Hate me for it. Oh well. Lol.
159Mariah7
i could see how she would be annoying.
but i think it would be pretty hard to be the rebel mockingjay.
but i think it would be pretty hard to be the rebel mockingjay.
160HannaMeads
Idont think it'd be that hard. I mean yeah it would get annoying to be told what to do but I mean its your free will for thousands of peoples lives.
161sarahy
i don't hate u! i see what you mean... but katniss does have rough life... she could just suck it up, you know? be the person they all want you to be. they need a leader...
162HannaMeads
yes, indeed. thank you for not hating me. lol.

The romance!
166justjukka
What I really appreciated about The Hunger Games was the way it hacked reality television and high society to pieces. People in the Districts are starving, yet people in the Capital are so hung up on having perfect eyebrows and painted bodies. I really felt for Katniss when she was going through the primping process, and I'm hoping (though highly doubting) that it begged the question, "What's the point of all this makeup? Why do we want our bodies to be perfectly hairless? What purpose do prepubescent-looking legs serve?"
#164 - I actually loved that about this book! I'm get so tired of reading about clueless men/boys who don't catch subtle (read obvious) hints. While we're reading all of this through Katniss' eyes, we, as the readers, can tell that Peeta's feelings are genuine, while she cannot. And her feelings at the end of the book are so real. How does she feel about Peeta? Are they her own feelings or were they just part of the game? Does she have feelings for Gale? He's her hunting partner. They work together to keep their families alive. What sort of feelings should she have for him? And she wasn't aware of the feelings of either boy until the end of the story.
Now, I hate love-triangles. They are the dregs of literature, and I wish Collins hadn't given in to her editor, but I suppose she managed to make it work (though not quite as well as this). The comparison between the boy at home and the boy on the battlefield, her feelings for both, and why she might not have feelings for either. But if not for that stupid trinity, Rue would have earned her rightful place on the promotional posters with Katniss and Peeta. I really liked Gale, but he wasn't as relevant to the story.

Of course Gale was relevant to the story. c'mon. If anyone wasn't relevant it would be Peeta. Collins could have just had Kat and gale go into the games together and left out allll that stuff about Peeta. Because that would be more plausable than the other.

I think Collins would be laying the SNAFU on a little thick if Katniss ran the risk of losing her sister to the games, followed by Gale getting thrown in. It would also diminish the relevance of Prim getting selected, because Gale had how-many ballots to Prim's one.

OK Gales relevant i guess.. but Peetas necessary..., he's a main character for crying out loud

Based on the movie or book? I didn't start hearing Peeta hate until after the movie came out.
171luna_lovegood
Peeta's relevant regardless..i dont care what u say

171--Not to be rude, but could you please explain your opinion on Peeta's irrelevance? I'm just curious about why you think that... :D
173luna_lovegood
Top 5 reasons Peeta's relevant and Gale couldn't be thrown in instead from 1st book only
1 Gale Wouldn't have joined carers
2 Katniss and Gale would be allies from the start
3 Gale wouldn't be painted into a rock
4 Gale could walk quietly... and therefore not kill foxface
5 He wouldn't need medicine... based on above points
so basically, if gale was thrown in, the plot line would completely change (which is bad)... and that's only for the 1st book

I see your point, but didn't Peeta "join" the Careers just so that he could keep tabs on Katniss? I may be wrong there, but...
Also, Peeta's strengths were so different from Katniss's, and his weaknesses were different too...Gale is so similar to Katniss that I personally feel that if HE were the one in the arena, there wouldn't be as much excitement/plot twists because he and Katniss would think so much alike that things might turn predictable. That's just my opinion, of course. :)

luna_lovegood - Just to clarify, do you mean relevant or irrelevant?
176luna_lovegood
>174 hyper13: Yes thats my point... but gale still wouldn't do it. And yeah your ight
HE IS RELEVANT!!!!
Got it?
HE IS RELEVANT!!!!
Got it?
177justjukka
Then why does it sound as though you're saying he's irrelevant?
Citing 169: "OK Gales relevant.. but no Peeta...really"
And then you go on about Gale's virtues in 173.

NO, thats why gale would CHANGE the plot line, which isn't good
179luna_lovegood
but your right 169 was vague
181luna_lovegood
I fixed both

Im saying Peeta came from no where and really didn't mean that much to Katniss until the games. Yeah he gave her bread but she didn't think about it everyday. She had to have Gale. Gale fed her family everyday and helped to hunt. Yeah the book wouldn't have been as interesting if Peeta weren't there just saying that he isn't as necessary as Gale.
185justjukka
184: I wouldn't say Gale fed Katniss's family, but they were definitely a team. After she learned all she needed from Gale, he wasn't as relevant, but who wants to go hunting alone? Peeta is something completely different. He's softer than either Katniss or Gale, which makes a good complement to her character and balances the character scheme of the story. I'm still not happy that the author was pushed into writing a love-triangle, because it was enough that Katniss and Gale helped each other survive.
