My favorite historical mystery series is probably the Sister Frevisse books by Margaret Frazer. One of the things that I particularly like about this series is that Frevisse is not some perky young woman who is always cheerful, smiling, and happy. She is allowed to have moments when she is decidedly unhappy and put-out with other people. And - even when other characters deserve to have someone be cranky with them and their actions - Frevisse tries to work on, and correct, this flaw.

Just had to resurrect this topic because Margaret Frazer's Sister Frevisse series is one of my favorites from the Medieval period. I've read all 12 and enjoyed every one. Then I started her Joliffe the Player series and have enjoyed it even more, I think. I've read only the first three; haven't been able to buy A Play of Lords or A Play of Treachery yet. If you are a Frevisse fan, have you read “Witch’s Tale” in Mike Ashley's, Historical Whodunits? It's our first look at the Sister.

Historical Mysteries is an excellent way to discover new mystery authors! I have 2 volumes of them (i am working on acquiring the third) & i found several in them that i had not had exposure to before Margaret Fraser being one of them. Others who caught my eye being Alan R. Gordon, Edward Marsten & Michael Jecks. The short stories I read by these authors left me wanting to read more. 8^)

Yes, one of my favorites also. I've read all the Frevisse and Joliffe books, and am looking forward to A Play of Piety. I wish she would write another Frevisse mystery.

I like the Gordon and Marston series, but haven't cared all that much for the Michael Jecks ones that I have read.

I have read all of the books by Margaret Frazer I have been able to lay hands upon 7 am always on the lookout for more. Have read all but the newest of the Joliffe books & love especially the ones w/both Joliffe & Frevisse! Am reading The Sempster'sTale at the moment. I have had the biggest problem accessing the earliest volume in the series. Our library only has the most recent ones. Am going to hit the used book stores next. 8^)

I am also a fan of the Dame Frevisse series. I started reading the Brother Cadfael series by Elizabeth Pargeter (a.k.a. Ellis Peters), and I saw the Frevisse books compared to the Cadfael books. I like her character. I also think her relationship with Chaucer adds a little interest to the tales.

By the way,

Did you know Margaret Frazer is actually a pen name for: Mary Monica Pulver and Gail Frazer who both were involved in writing the series?

Margaret Frazer is a favourite author of mine, I wish she wrote faster. I appreciate her character development reflecting the aging of the character and the impact the events happening in England have on them. In the same way I like the moving historical background in which she places her books.

Margaret Frazer is now the sole author.
