I'm going to post then quit the group, but I'm into indie films.
I strongly recommend that all y'all watch "The Whole Wide World" with Vincent D'Onofrio playing Bob Howard.

Watching "The whole wide world" made me want to read Robert E. Howard. He seemed like such a passionate and eccentric person. According to the movie he killed himself as soon as his mother died after a long illness, suggesting that he had wanted to kill himself for a while and was just waiting. The restless characters that he writes about take on a new meaning when you think of things that way.

Robert E. Howard's suicide definitely followed soon after his mother's death, so I'd say it's fair to say that it acted as a sort of catalyst. He had a lifetime of neurotic weirdness too, but really there was no indication that he was pre-suicidal, at least according to most of the biographical material I've read concerning Howard.

Most of what I read regarding Howard's life was in the form of essays from Amra reprinted in The Blade of Conan and The Spell of Conan.
