Fantasy. Romance. Folklore. Young Adult Fiction. Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. Each day she goes to school like a normal teenager, and each night she must swim, or the pain will be unbearable. She is a siren - a deadly mermaid destined to lure men to their watery deaths. After a terrible tragedy, Lexi shut herself off from the world, vowing to protect the ones she loves. But she soon finds herself caught between a new boy at school who may have the power to melt her icy exterior, and a handsome water spirit who says he can break Lexi's curse if she gives up everything else. Lexi is faced with the hardest decision she's ever had to make: the life she's always longed for - or the love she can't live without?… (mehr)

I read this simply because it came across my desk, and I haven't seen many siren/mermaid books (yet). It was predictable, not very imaginatively written, and the characters never become more than stereotypical sketches. But it was diverting for an hours' worth of reading. ( )

The Plot: 5/5
So, we have a girl who’s a siren. And then we have half of a cutesy–tutesy romance. And then, in a predictable way, some other guy comes in and breaks it up and picks the cutesy-tutesy romance right up where it left off. Siren hijinks ensue.
(It’s better than I made it sound. Like, really.)

The Characters: 5/5
Lexi: just…wow. Her character was so deep and what she went through was amazing.
Cole: I really wish he’d picked up on the vibes, done his research and come back already knowing about the Siren stuff, but it all worked out just fine anyway.
Sienna: was perfect in her role in this.
Erik: okay, about Erik, the way that he went about breaking up the Cutesy-tutesy romance… well, it happened in such a way that I couldn’t dislike him right off the bat. I could, however, dislike him right off the bat regarding his name. Erik, with a k. As in, Erik, from HoN. If you know me at all, then you know I think he’s a dickwad. So his name knocked off three points for him right away, but I couldn’t really find any other reasons to dislike him So I didn’t really, and he fooled ME. ME. I pridemyself on being able to predict, to some extent, the bad guys and who’s gonna die early on in books. But he fooled me.

The Romance: 5/5
I don’t usually go for cutesy-tutesy romances, because I don’t tend to read cutesy-tutesy romance. The stuff I read is usually more along the lines of EPIC OVE STUFF or cheesy instalove that I’m not emotionally invested in. But the romance in this book was a good middle ground. I much enjoyed it.

Overall grade: 15/15
You can count on me reading more Mandy Hubbard.

Also, just a random thing: last week, I read the Near Witch by Victoria Schwab, and the main girl in tha book was name Lexi and the main boy was called Cole. In this book, the main girl was ALSO named Lexi, and the main boy was named Cole. Coincidence? I think not, as an amateur conspiracy theorist who does not believe in coincidences.
