One reviewer described "Target in the Night" as a detective story that isn't really a detective story. It is certainly true that reducing the work to a detective story is a great injustice and, indeed, not accurate. There is a mystery here but only as a framework on which hangs the complexity of its characters and life as a whole. The novel is truthful, unique and wonderfully written. The novel and its characters grapple (not always successfully) with the workings of the life they find themselves in. A very smart and thoughtful book that really shouldn't be missed by any serious reader. A passionate political and psychological thriller set in a remote Argentinean Pampas town, Target in the Night is an intense and tragic family history reminiscent of King Lear, in which the madness of the detective is integral to solving crimes. Target in the Night, a masterpiece, won every major literary prize in the Spanish language in 2011.
