After the War The Lives and Images of Major Civil War Figures After the Shooting Stopped, by David Hardin (read 14 Jul 2012) This is a non-pretentious but well put together book, telling of the postwar lives of 11 Civil War figures and how their reputations were affected by books and interviews discussing their time in the Civil War. Included are chapters on Winnie Davis, Jefferson Davis' second wife, Sherman, Grant, Mary Chesnut, John Bell Hood, Forrest, Mary Todd Lincoln, Joseph Johnston, Lee, George Thomas, and Custer. I found each chapter told me stuff I did not know, and it made me realize how contentious some of the events and doings in the War turned out to be afterwards. One does not have to be a Civil War buff to appreciate the very interesting stories the author has compiled by diligent research.
