A Simple Amish Christmas by Vannetta Chapman is a sweet story. I thought the story was well-written with developed, likeable characters. I enjoyed getting to know Annie Weaver and her family along with Samuel Yoder. I was surprised, though, at how easily Annie gave up her position at the hospital. I know she missed her family, home, and community. Annie’s father had gumption. He was not going to let his accident hold him back. I enjoyed the descriptions that allowed me to visualize the characters, the homes, and the scenery. I liked learning how the Amish celebrate Christmas. Their decorations are simple but homey. Gifts made by hand make them extra special. It was interesting to learn the Amish’s approach to medicine. They prefer to see one of their own and use natural remedies versus an Englisch doctor. There is some repetition of details (Annie was happy to home, that she had been gone for three years, how Samuel irked her). One of my favorite lines is, “Secrets aren’t always bad, Annie. Unless they weigh heavy on your soul—like the clouds pushing down over our fields.” A Simple Amish Christmas is a story that will leave you smiling. I read A Simple Amish Christmas when it was first released, and I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. A Simple Amish Christmas is a gratifying tale with an injured father, a returning daughter, secret schooling, an obdurate Amish doctor, and Christmas cheer. ( )

i stopped reading this book as it used Amish words.. unfortunately unless i went to the end of the book,on my kindle, i had no clue as to what the words meant.. maybe if the word meanings were to the front of the kindle it would be a lot easier.. ( )

Chapman’s main characters, Annie and Samuel skim along the surface of emotions, memories, and romance. She presents a conflict between the Amish culture duty and responsibilities to others with fulfilling one’s own needs. The story has an undertone of faith without preaching a specific religious belief. ( )

Review at pg. 149:
The more I read, the more I love this story. Amish novels have grown in popularity with lightning speed lately and some of them, though well-written, do not ring absolutely true. Amish ways are still such a mystery to us in so many ways but there are bits of some stories that you can be sure is not true to Amish life.
This book is not that way. It is clear the author has done her research and done it well.
I look forward to reading her other novels and I hope there are more about this family. I'll have to go and do my own research I guess. ( )

Unsettled and unable to follow through with anything, Annie was sent to Philadelphia to live with Englisch relatives during her rumschpringe. While in the city she finished her education and became a registered nurse. When a buggy accident left her dat with both legs broken she immediately left for her Amish home to aid in nursing her dat back to health, her family unaware that she had become a nurse. Samuel Yoder, her dat's best friend and the "doctor" to the Amish community was gruff and mistrustful of Annie's skills as a caregiver, but Annie's change in character was about to open everyone's eyes.

As in Vannetta Chapman's other Amish fiction stories the reader is immersed in the Amish culture and countryside. She paints a peaceful portrait of a hardworking farming community of close-knit godly people. The author has researched the Anabaptist culture closely and characterizes their lifestyle with integrity and intellect. Convincing characters are authentic and evolve naturally throughout the story, and the author has interwoven spiritual qualities throughout, enhancing a well-told story.

Lessons in tolerance, consideration, forgiveness and grace flowed throughout this book and left me yearning for the simplicity the Amish personify. When family and friends asked why I was reading a Christmas book at this time of year I was a bit surprised because this story is so much more than just a Christmas story. It's a story of a people and the lifestyle they represent. I highly recommend this very touching story, at Christmastime or a 90-degree summer day!
