Recent studies on brain function and growth have opened the way to discovering what is going on in an infant's mind and reinvigorated the nature/nurture debate. The Human Genome Project promises a blueprint for every individual, but these exciting genetic discoveries, says neuroscientist Lise Eliot, also raises the alarming tendency to think there is little we can do to influence a child's fate, that it is all a matter of heredity. In this fascinating book, the author has gathered and summerised the existing research on how infants and young children develop cognition and learn.
There is a section on prenatal development that looks at factors that can influence a child in utero, and also discusses what we know about a developing fetus (when it starts to hear, how it responds to environmental stimuli etc).
Later sections look at neonates and toddlers, and examines their sensory responses, development of language and social development. It doesn't list milestones, but discusses the way that these skills unfold.
The book is written in a straightforward, easy to read manner and is a fascinating read for a new parent or parent to be. ( )
