En esta tierra, el que gobierna no es como entre los cristianos. Allí manda el que manda y todos obedecen. Aquí, hay que arreglarse primero con los otros caciques, con los capitanejos, con los hombres antiguos. Todos son libres y todos son iguales. Como se ve, para Mariano Rosas, nosotros vivimos en plena dictadura, y los indios en plena democracia. No creí necesaria corregir sus ideas. Por otra parte, me hubiera visto un tanto atado para demostrarle y probarle que el Gobierno, la autoridad, el poder, la fuerza disciplinada y organizada no son omnipotentes en nuestra turbulenta república. Aquí donde todos los días declamamos sobre la necesidad de prestigiar, robustecer y rodear al poder, siendo así que el hecho histórico persistente, enseña a todos los que tienen ojos y quieren ver, que la mayor parte de nuestras desgracias proviene del abuso de autoridad. Mariano Rosas y Baigorrita, como dos jefes de partido tenían el terreno preparado, la votación segura; pero uno y otro antes de imponer su voluntad habían lisonjeado las preocupaciones populares. ¿No es esto lo que vemos todos los días? La paz y la guerra, ¿no se resuelven así? ¿El pueblo no tolera todo -hasta que se juegue su destino-, con tal que se le deje gritar un poco? ¿No hace presidentes, gobernadores, diputados, en nombre de ciertas ideas, de ciertas tendencias, de ciertas aspiraciones, y las camarillas, no hacen después lo que quieren y las muchedumbres no callan? | |
