Have you ever built a snowman and discovered the next day that his grin has gotten a little crooked, or his tree-branch arms have moved? And you've wondered . . . what do snowmen do at night?

I thought this was a super creative book. It had really funny pictures and I enjoyed reading this. I thought it had a great backstory to why snowmen change shape overnight

This fiction text takes readers on a ride to see what snowmen really do at night. Kids love to make their predictions and if their predictions were correct! ( )

What DO snowmen do at night? Turns out they get up to all kinds of adventures! Told in rhyme, with full-page illustrations (oil over acrylics). My only quibble is that they're all snowMEN - the only female characters are, of course, the "snowman mothers," serving cocoa to the snowmen playing games.

This is a charming book about the adventures of snowmen (and snow ladies, children, & pets) at night. The words have an easy rhythmic flow that my students love to listen to, "His hat had slipped, his arms drooped down, he really looked a fright", not to mention the new vocabulary I was able to introduce to my students. The illustrations are both captivating and humorous, and the details are outstanding. This story stirs up so many connections, conversations, and smiles! Great book! ( )

Snowmen at night is a great book with talking about all the fun snowmen have at night while we are all sleeping! It's a very engaging book, and there are great chances for making predictions, visualizing, and inferring! For example, my students had to really think about why snowmen would be drinking ice cold cocoa! It's a fun read with kiddos and it gets their imaginations stirring! ( )

Every year I enjoy reading these books with my class. The illustrations are so detailed, with the use of color depicting certain times of night, and how everything is lit up, using shading of colors like yellows and orange. It gets the students excited for winter, and also paved the way for writing about other imaginable characters points of view. ( )

Have you ever built a snowman and discovered the next day that his grin has gotten a little crooked, or his tree-branch arms have moved? And you've wondered . . . what do snowmen do at night? This delightful wintertime tale reveals all! Caralyn Buehner's witty, imaginative verse offers many amusing details about the secret life of snowmen and where they go at night, while Mark Buehner's roly-poly snowmen are bursting with personality and charm.

There are three reasons why I did not like this book. First, I did not like how the book was not very long and did not have many words on each page. For example, each page was only a short paragraph with the focus on the pictures rather than the words. Second, I did not like how some of the words on the page was not in a straight line of words, or in paragraph format. Instead some phrases were sideways. For example, the page represented the snowmen sledding down the hill, therefore, the line of words was in a formation of the words going down the hill. I just found it harder to read for some children that may have a challenging time reading. Third, I did not like how, although the story was from a kid’s imagination, the story never showed children the real reason why snowmen look different in the morning compared to when you make them. For example, the kid imagines that snowmen drink hot cocoa and go sledding at night, instead of melting away throughout the night. The big idea of this story was showing what children might think that snowmen do at night to end up all melty in the morning. ( )

When he finds his snowman somewhat melted one morning, a young boy wonders what the snowy figure might have gotten up to the night before, imagining a series of exciting events, from a trip to the park to a sports competition involving all of the snowman's friends. The snowmen enjoy themselves immensely in this imaginary scenario, something which offers potential comfort to the children who observe their deteriorated condition the next day...

The first of a series of picture-books from author/illustrator team Caralyn and Mark Buehner about the doings of those popular snow figures, Snowmen at Night pairs an entertaining imaginary tale told in rhyme with bright, colorful artwork. The book would make an excellent read-aloud at story time - especially in the winter! - while the artwork provides a more interactive experience, in which children can search for the hidden images in the illustrations. For my part, I found a lot of Santas in the snow! Recommended to all young children who loves snowmen, and wonder what they get up to at night, as well as to those looking for rhyming picture-books with a wintry theme. ( )

Snowmen play games at night when no one is watching
  jhawn | Jul 31, 2017 |
Fun and cute story of what snowmen do at night while we are sleeping. You get to see snowmen sled, play games and all kinds of fun antics. My favorite was the snowman with the pickle for a nose. Great book for younger children. ( )

Genre: fantasy

Review/Critique: The imaginative story of what snowmen actually do when people go to bed. They sled, snowball fight, and just have a crazy time. When they get back in the morning they are all droopy from sleep! That's why they are droopy! This is fantasy because the snowmen come to life and party. ( )

a fun story about what snowman do at night!

While this is a rhyming book, the rhymes don't flow as smoothly as some other books do. When reading this book aloud, it's harder to pick out rhyming patterns because the length of the sentences are uneven and choppy. If I was using this book to teach a lesson, I probably wouldn't use it to teach rhyming for this reason. ( )

This winter story explores the question, "what do snowmen do at night?". It shares some of the snowmen's adventures that take place while we are all sleeping. They have races, snowball fights, make ice-cold cocoa, and more before returning to their places in the morning.

Um, I'm sorry, this would have gotten four stars, but the bit about 'snowman mothers' making hot cocoa just rankles. If they really want to melt their insides, they can make their own cocoa, or have a committee or something. But go ahead, read it with your children, and see what they think of that page. ( )

This book is a good example of a picture book/modern fantasy because it is showing something that can not happen like snowmen playing at night while everyone is a sleep. This book makes children wonder what happens to snowmen at night when we are sleeping and why do they look different in the morning. It is a fun book showing snowmen sledding down hills, having snowball fights and doing so much more. The illustrations are very detail and have hidden shapes throughout the book for children to find like a rabbit, cat, Santa face, and more.
Media: Oil paints and acrylic ( )

I thought this was a good book. It creates the idea that snowmen can become alive. The story was written in rhyme so I think that help children learn potentially new vocabulary. For example, the end of one line reads "so", and the end of another reads, "go". The author also makes the snowmen seem very happy in the nighttime. The illustrations were very engaging and complete this book with a consistently happy feel. The main message is to have a vast imagination, and to learn about activities to do in the snow. ( )

About all the fun snowmen have at night.
  MindyEwing | Dec 21, 2015 |
Love this one since we first read it at just a few months old. The story and imagery are great. The details in the images are fun and we like looking for the hidden things. It's also a good book for signing with baby. ( )

This is a book to help children imagine what snowmen do at night to make them melt during the day. It is a good Christmas book to let students reflect on what could be happening to their favorite things when they aren't looking.
