Will Dawnie be able to hold on to the true meaning of justice and remain faithful to her own sense of integrity

Thank you Goodreads and Scholastic for a chance to read With the Might of Angels by Andrea Davis Pinkney!

This book was a trip back in time. Not too far but far enough Dawnie Rae Johnson was a brave young girl. This story was well written. And it's sad to say it touches on a subject that is still something our country still struggles with today. This book shows us clearly the heartbreak and the betrayal's that Dawnie had to face. This would be a good book for schools to share with their students. It touched enough of the ugliness that the kids would be able to understand what happened back then. Nice lovely read. Happy reading everyone!! ( )

In my opinion this a very well written book. However, that is not the specific reason as to why I fell in love with this book was because of the plot. The plot revolved around Brown v. Board of Education, a real court case. Though fiction, the book had a plot that was well organized and provided conflict that was easy to follow, yet interesting. The court case serves as an example. "Negro kids go to Bethune. White kids go to Prettyman Coburn. Colored people can't try on clothes or shoes they want to buy to see if they fit." This also serves as an example and the main idea or message of the story which allows for children to see how different things were during this time period. The story's there is meaning and the setting is accurate for the time period. The characters acted in authentic ways, though I expected the main character, Dawnie Rae Johnson, to speak in more of an African American dialect. for this time period. ( )
