Poindexter is a shy pig who really wants to be friends with the neighborhood kids. Every time they ask him to play he makes up a silly excuse because he is to shy to play with them. Poindexter loves spending time with his stuffed animals and at the library. One day he meets Shelby at the library. Shelby is a very shy turtle that wants to learn how to make friends. Poindexter reads him a book about how to make friends and they become best friends.

This is a story of a shy pig and a shy turtle that really want to make friends but they are to shy to do so. They meet at the library and they read a book about making friends. This is a good book in the elementary setting to show kids it is okay to be shy, but most importantly it is okay for shy children to open up to people. ( )

Short Summary: A really sweet story about a pig that is very shy and doesn't have any friends but meets a turtle who is also very shy in the library and becomes really good friends with him. The images are friendly and warm, giving the theme of approachability and friendship a nice touch.

Personal Reflection: Lots of kids in preschool (and above too) are shy and may be weary of making new friends. This is a great read aloud for younger kids to get them thinking about finding friends and that everyone is shy. I liked that the pictures share more than what the words say, too, which makes it easy to talk about what kids think is happening between friends.
