In book 4 of the Scanguard Vampries series, Yvette is the only female vampire in the Scanguards inner circle. Since all her friends and colleagues are men, she feels she has to always be tough and never show her feminine side, or she’ll lose her friends’ respect and her respect in herself. After a betrayal in her human life, it’s hard for her to express love, and she doesn’t think any man will want her for more than a quick lay.
Haven is a bounty hunter and vampire slayer. Though his mother was a witch, Haven and his two younger siblings didn’t inherit any of her power. After an evil witch kidnaps his brother Wesley, Haven has to do a job for the witch in order to free Wesley. The job? Kidnap a young actress and deliver her to the witch. Unfortunately for him, Yvette just happens to be the actress’s bodyguard.
Yvette and Haven both want each other, but as a vampire and as a hunter, they also hate each other. Even though Yvette is clearly the stronger of the two, the mutual respect between her and Haven is strong. He doesn’t treat her like a damsel or feel inferior to her, and she doesn’t treat him like a wimp. They think of each other as equals and work as a team.
The rest of the Scanguards play a large role in this book as in the previous ones. While Yvette and her unlikely allies fight on one front, her vampire friends fight on the other. When they all join forces, the final battle is awesome.
This book is much faster paced but shorter in word count/page length from the others I’ve read in the series. There are less sex scenes, but the scenes are still hot. It’s not often when a book surprises me, but I loved the twist at the end of this one. I’m always happy when I’m shocked in a good way.
The book is fairly well edited, so I was able to overlook a few stray typos.

Synopsis

Can Yvette and Haven overcome their mutual animosity and will they give in to the mounting attraction between them?

Review
Yvette is such a b*tch in the previous books and I wasn't sure that I would enjoy her book but it ended up being one of my favorites.

Haven and Yvette are hot and steamy together but their sex scenes only contribute to the build up of their relationship. Yvette has a painful past and finds it difficult to trust others so often pushes them away. Locked up with Haven, she cannot resort to this and is forced to face up to both her attraction and emotional response to him.

On his part, Haven must confront and overcome his prejudices against vampires, and with each revelation concerning his past, the barriers start coming down, which makes the process believable.

There are some predictable moments in the plot but also a sudden twist at the end, which caught me completely by surprise. The one thing that really annoyed me was Haven's brother, Wesley, who made me want to get inside the book so that I could slap him silly.

The insights into Zane's character are one of the best aspects along with the sense of family amongst the Scanguards and the updates in the relationships from the previous books. Looking forward to Zane meeting his match in the next installment. ( )

One of the things i love about this book series is the San Francisco bay Area setting...being from SF, I love reading the descriptions of neighborhoods and surrounding cities that i grew up in. The landmarks, streets, other locations come to life for me.

This book was not as exciting as the previous ones, and did seem to drag a bit - especially all the time in the warehouse with the witch. I think more time should have been spent on the kids mother and that back story, and on the development of the Power of Three, and how/why it would upset the balance in the underworld.

All in all still an enjoyable read ( )
