Self-discovery is the message that Cunnane wants her readers to take from this book. I like this book because Chirchir discovered what she was good at but, the text was hard to understand. The book did have a glossary in the back of the book for readers to refer when stuck on a word. However, it was hard for me to understand the text without running into difficulties. I commend the author for italicizing the portion in the text when Chirchir is singing. It helped organize my reading. The pictures were not the best in my opinion. I did; however, noticed the zoomed out focus of the pictures. It was almost as if I were in a plane looking down on Chirchir family's land. I kind of like that perspective of art for this book. Overall, I like the book and its message. ( )

Young Chirchir unsuccessfully tries to help her family in many ways unitl she finds something she can do well. ( )

Nice African tale, with good notes from author at end. ( )
