NCLA Review: "This book is for anyone who ever wanted to know more about the Holy Land—its geography, culture, history, and especially its holy sites." It is also a helpful guide for anyone traveling to the Holy Land (even armchair travelers!) and Bible students. After an introductory chapter, the author divides Israel into nine geographic areas, covering the country from south to north, with a separate chapter devoted to each area. Articles on each site begin with the meaning of its name, its pronunciation and location, and are filled with color photographs and Bible passages associated with the site. The book also includes some eyewitness accounts by well-known people such as Henry van Dyke and Mark Twain, to name but a few. There is an Index of Sites & Places and maps at the back of the book. The author does state that "all authorities do not agree about the exact location of the holy places," and makes note of such disagreements throughout the book. The author, George Knight, developed the popular Layman's Bible Dictionary in 1977. He has been a reference editor and operates his own editorial services company. Overall, I would recommend this book for any church library collection. It is a good value for the money. It provides a quick reference to the places of the Holy Land and helps put it all into perspective for the average Bible reader. Rating: 3 —BS ( )
