Why we measure is a fantastic book for emergent level readers that can be used in a guided reading setting. It is a non-fiction text that opens students up to the concept of measuring. It shows them where and how to measure certain items they see in their everyday lives. This book would be great for K-2 students as well as English language learners. I used this book on my second grade ESL student and the book brought up some fantastic conversation about what it means to measure something and why we measure certain items. The book has great large images that students can use as picture cues when they find themselves stuck on new vocabulary. I would not recommend using this book past second grade unless the learner is new to English. ( )

Why we Measure by Lisa Trumbauer is a great book to have in any classroom for learners who are starting to learn to read or to learn to read in English. The book does a good job of providing clues to the reader as to what the meaning of the text is. The words themselves are relatively easy for most students since they have most likely seen them and heard them before. The only problem you may have with this text is that some of the things being measured in the book may not be familiar to some students. Highway songs and old school maps may not be things all students are aware of, but other than that this is a good book to have in the classroom. ( )

This is a shorter text that explains how children can measure different items in their environment. The book is written following a pattern. Patterns make it easier for students to engage with the text and figure out unknown words. Teachers can use this book in a guided reading setting to teach sight words, different letters and their sounds, strategies to figure out unknown words, and even how to use picture cues to help them identify words. This is an excellent choice for a guided reading book because it is part of a set that comes in different reading levels so you can meet the needs of each of your students. ( )

"Why We Measure" introduces young students to what we measure, how we measure, and what it means to measure. It uses real life photographs to support the different measuring tools and things we measure, so students are able to make text-to-self connections when they recognize what they have experienced with measuring tools and what they get measured. One side of the book is more difficult and one side is shorter, simpler sentences, so when I used this with my student, we only read the simple side. Due to this, he quickly learned the pattern and was eager to read along with me and eventually read some on his own. This is a great guided reading book because if the student does not know a word the picture cues are very useful for figuring out the word or a word similar. Lastly, it offers many math descriptive attributes, such as a car’s speed can be measured. ( )

"Why We Measure" introduces young students to what we measure, how we measure, and what it means to measure. It uses real life photographs to help children make connections even if they cannot read the words themselves. The book introduces a bit of math and science and prepares students for being able to measure themselves. I would use this book as a introduction to a lesson where students learn to use a ruler and measure items they find around the classroom. ( )
