The groundbreaking book that explains Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)--and presents a drug-free approach that offers hope for parents--now revised and updated. Does your child exhibit... Over-responsivity--or under-responsivity--to touch or movement? A child with SPD may be a "sensory avoider," withdrawing from touch, refusing to wear certain clothing, avoiding active games--or he may be a "sensory disregarder," needing a jump start to get moving. Over-responsivity--or under-responsivity--to sounds, sights taste, or smell? She may cover her ears or eyes, be a picky eater, or seem oblivious to sensory cues. Cravings for sensation? The "sensory craver" never gets enough of certain sensations, e.g., messy play, spicy food, noisy action, and perpetual movement. Poor sensory discrimination? She may not sense the difference between objects or experiences--unaware of what she's holding unless she looks, and unable to sense when she's falling or how to catch herself. Unusually high or low activity level? The child may be constantly on the go--wearing out everyone around him--or move slowly and tire easily, showing little interest in the world. Problems with posture or motor coordination? He may slouch, move awkwardly, seem careless or accident-prone. These are often the first clues to Sensory Processing Disorder--a common but frequently misdiagnosed problem in which the central nervous system misinterprets messages from the senses. The Out-of-Sync Child offers comprehensive, clear information for parents and professionals--and a drug-free treatment approach for children. This revised edition includes new sections on vision and hearing, picky eaters, and coexisting disorders such as autism and Asperger's syndrome, among other topics.… (mehr)

A worthwhile book on a disorder with a broad constellation of symptoms, but a judicious editing could both punch up the prose and integrate more recent findings, as well as effective interventions. Ms. Kranowitz knows her stuff, and as an educator working with students who suffer from a variety of neural and cognitive processing disorders, I found this book basically indispensable. So, on the basis of its use for informing pedagogical decisions, I rate this book closer to five stars.

Carol Kranowitz explains how Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) affects children's learning and behavior. Carol offers thoughtful insights into how SPD affects the everyday lives of the children we love, and offers practical advice on what we all can do to help. Selected Reading Questionnaire.

A helpful introduction to sensory processing disorder, but don't go in expecting detailed activities or ideas for your specific situation. The detailed examples are a little repetitive, but they also help the reader begin to pinpoint the problems that their child does, and does not, have. ( )

This book was recommended to me by Hyrum's Occupational Therapist because he has a sensory processing disorder. His sensory disorder is mainly motor but there are other SPD's. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks their child may be struggling a little bit. I was suprised to see how much behavior can be affected by these disorders and they can range from very mild to severe. We knew Hyrum had something wrong but it took a lot of work trying to figure it out. His doctor was not much help and just said that he would grow out of it but we didn't take that for an answer and I am very glad we didn't. Also, just a note if you have noticed a difference in your child you should have them screened for autism as soon as possible because often times SPD can look like autism but your window for autism is much smaller. This is also a good book for any parent to help children develop their nervous system. The activity book that goes with it has so many great activites that any child would enjoy. ( )

Even after reading this book, I didn't feel that I understood very well what SPD is. Perhaps the point is that can co-exist with other well-known disorders and that one needs a well-trained professional to be able to diagnose it.

This book is more of a reference book, so I imagine if you wanted to look up something specific or a get a quick refresher, it could be useful. But not so great as an introduction for someone who's seeking to understand what SPD is. ( )

Surely, you know a child who is oversensitive, clumsy, picky, fidgety, and out of sync.
