Nice story about a young Thai girl who accidentally rescues an elephant and ends up changing her life.

Tua is a small Thai girl who saves a baby elephant (Phon-Phon) who is being abused by the street con-men who own her. The two men do not give up easily, and the bulk of the story is the adventure of Tua trying to get Phon-Phon to an elephant sanctuary before the two criminals can get him back.
It is a simple story with an adorable heroine, lovable elephant, an interesting cast of Thai characters who are encountered along the way. Would be a wonderful read-aloud book to a 3rd or 4th grader, as long as the reader was comfortable attempting to pronounce the many Thai words that are scattered throughout the book. ( )

Readers will enjoy this charming adventure that conveys aspects of Thai culture as 10-year-old Tua saves Pohn-Pohn, the elephant, from the cruel mahouts and makes new friends along the way. Author’s Note.

What a lovely, refreshing story. The books size makes it feel as if you are holding Tua and Pohn-Pohn's hearts in your hands. The writing is superb, giving readers the feel of being in bustling Chiang Mai. The illustrations (though sparse) are wonderful and their coloring truly complements the story. I especially appreciate the depth with which the author shared cultural traditions and the Thai language.

Pros: Look no further than Tua and the Elephant if you want a bedtime adventure with heart. Readers are treated to a story with timeless appeal and the opportunity to learn about other cultural traditions, as well.

What a delightful story! Fast paced, easy and fun to read.

Tua (peanut in Thai), lives with her mother in Thailand... she is an intelligent little girl with many friends in the market.

One afternoon, Tua slips through a hole in a wall and comes upon a small elephant being mistreated by two dreadful men. Tua & the elephant communicate at the heart level, so Tua follows the men & the Elephant to the banks of the river where they camp each night and takes the elephant away with her.....

The men awake to find the Elephant missing and give chase. With the help of the community in which she lives, Tua is able to keep the elephant away from the men.

Absolutely Delightful! ( )
